Robinson going after Liberal nomination bid Dave Robinson ooking for Liberal nomination. Seagrave resident Dave Robinson will be seeking the Liberal nomination for the provincial riding of Durham East. Mr. Robinson, a teacher at Port Perry High School and a resident of Scugog for the last 13 years is the past National Chairman of the Kinsmen Clubs of Canada and has been the recipient of several awards at the local, provincial and national levels for achievement and leadership. In a statement on his candidacy for the Liberal nomination, he said the next provincial government must set a budget with no new or increased taxes, and this budget must set in motion an action plan te get the Ontario economy moving again. He said Ontario needs an ethics commissioner to ensure honest, open and ethical government; MPPs should not be able to collect pensions until they are 55 years of age and should never be allowed to "double dip." He also wants regulations on lobbyists so that people kriow who is working on behalf of special interest groups, and changes to the system to give 985-3700 OSHAWA 308 Stevenson Rd. N. 434-7700 MPPs more freedom to better represent their constituents. Mr. Robinson said voters have grown suspicious and cynical bout the political process at all levels and politicians must work to restore faith in both reps and government. "Politicians must be more approachable and more answer- able to the voters. There has to be better communications and no more passing the buck," he said. He said provincial taxes should be reduced by five per cent over a five year period to stimulate job creation and government must cut the red tape that is "stifling business." License On health care issues, he said he opposes user fees, but wants a crack-down on fraud, abuse, waste and duplication in the health system. And consumers need more information about the need to stay healthy and what services are available to them. The next provincial election will likely be late spring next year. There could be as many as half a dozen hopefuls seeking the Liberal nomination in Durham East. No date has been set for the nomination meeting. Mr. Robinson is executive vice president of the Durham East Liberal Association. plates will glow in dark If you buy a set of Ontario license plates after Sept. 12, you'll notice that they have a whole new look. "One of the changes is that new licence plates will now be reflective, a design aspect that will make parked and abandoned vehicles easier for other drivers to see at night," said Gilles Pouliot, Minister of Transportation. "We are working to make Ontario's roads the safest in North America, and reflective licence plates are another tool to help us do that." The new licence plates will feature reflective embossed characters, reflective slogan and crown and a reflective, stylized "Ontario" name. Eight provinces and 50 American states currently use reflective licence plates. For the first time people will be able to pay for new licence plates with an approved credit card as well as cash or cheque. The fee for new or replacement plates will be $20.00. Personalized licence plates will be available, also next Monday, for $125.00. Prices will vary in the future as additional options are introduced. These include graphics, available later this fall, and seven and eight character personalized plates, which will be offered in spring 1995. The reflective licence plates are available at all driver and vehicle offices in the province for people purchasing new or replacement plates. Now that they're back, we could all use a little refresher course on what to do when you meet one on the road. It's very simple. You must STOP when a school bus flashes Its red warning signals, even if you're going in the opposite direction. Let's all have a safe fall ... and remember, the roads turn yellow before the leaves do. PHILP PONTIAC BUICK LIMITED 10 Vanedward Drive, Port Perry HE] wisn Parts 985-271
