Port Perry Fair Board member _ Karen Puckrin will be candidate for Ward five in the up-coming Scugog municipal elections. Mrs. Puckrin announced her candidacy last Friday, the day before a political controversy erupted at the Port Perry Fair when the Board put up a large sign critical of the current council for the failure to get a FIND OUT : a' new ten-year lease for the Fairgrounds. She told the Citizen she favours a new ten year lease without the controversial escape clause that would permit the lease to be termingted on one year's notice by either the Fair Board or the Township coungil. "It is very difficult to plan for the future of the Fair. This termination clause really limits future planning. We are trying to make the Fair more relevant to the changing demographics in the community," she said. Mrs. Puckrin is serving her first term on the Fair Board. Her husband Paul is also on the Board and is a member of the committee working on a new lease agreement with the Township. Mrs. Puckrin has lived in Port Perry for the last decade: A registered nurse, she spent ten years years working in Wawa and then as a community health nurse with the VON in Durham. She has worked on numerous volunteers committees in Scugog including Cawker Sehool Library, the Millar Lights, hospital fund-raising and the Port Perry Fair Board. She said Scugog Township, like all levels of government must reduce its costs by "doing more with less." The local tax base can be expanded by attracting new housing, light industry and tourism. But the Township must strive to preserve what makes it so attractive for the people who live here. Commenting on a proposed community hall at the Scugog Arena, she said she would prefer to see the Township delay issuing a tender Until after the November 14 election to give the in-coming council a chance to review the project. This will be her first attempt at elected office, but said she 4-H Swine Club Leaders for the 1994 Swine Club were Bill Lamb and Andrew Frew. SIx meetings were held with 12 members.
