These programs were generally designed to address two issues. First, for people who learned to * drive over forty years ago, little formal instruction was available, Their _current driving knowledge is usually based on experience alone and they are often unaware of specific traffic rules and safety procequres that have developed over the years. Second, it was recognized that while the physical and cognitive changes related to aging may be irreversible, people can learn to compensate for them. } Since the mid 1970's, many programs have developed throughout North America to re-educate older drivers. The major program in Canada is the 55 Alive/Mature Driving program offered through the Canada Safety Council, provincial affiliates and other contracted agencies or groups. It is based on the program designed by the American Association of Retired Persons in the 1970's. It is a six hour course, utilizing a participatory format, which highlights the contributing causes of motor vehicle collisions among elderly drivers. Medical research shows that most physical changes which affect driving ability begin, on average, around age 556 and tend to accelerate beyond that age, often without the older driver's awareness. By taking a re-education, course, there. is an increased opportunity to avoid a collision and thus prevent the driver from becoming one of the statistics in the over 55 age group.
