Port Bantams 'After months of preparation the Port Perry Bantam hants put their league play aside to host this year's OASA tournament. Port had very high hopes heading into play, but some lackluster defense and stiff competition kept them from accomplishing their goal. Port's first game was on Sat., Aug. 20, against St. Mary's. Facing an excellent pitcher, the Merchants could only manage three hits by Jeff Clarke, Brad Morton and Marshall McQuaid and lost 3-0. Matt Kay stood tall on the mound in this one for Port as he pitched a superb game in a losing cause. ' Their next game took place only minutes after their first and facing much inferior team from Meaford, the Merchants won handily 11-0. An onslaught of hits in the first inning, followed by an onslaught of hits in the second, followed by an onslaught of hits in the third and so on and so on....provided Marshall McQuaid with a comfortable cushion, and allowed him to pitch brilliantly. He quietly put together a two hit masterpiece fanning six. To advance any further Port would have to beat a squad from New Hamburg which was no easy task. Perhaps looking ahead too far, Port experienced a shellacking and lost by the same score as their previous win. The game was halted in the third inning due to rain and when play resumed Port totally lost interest and certainly ended the tournament on a sour note. Most of the Merchants were back the next day to prepare diamonds and keep score and witnessed a great final as Inverary defeated Waterford. Port would like to thank the parent volunteers who helped drag and line diamonds and run the gate. The team members would also like to thank coaches, Ron Short and Craig Venning for their hard work as well as Carolyn Best and Dave Kay who helped keep the tournament runnin smoothly. =p" Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, September 13,1994 --29 The B division final was a real close "affair with the Pink Panthers defeated E Blackstock 'Beamers 13-11 In extra Innings In Port Perry Ladles Lob Ball finals on Saturday.
