Last Saturday night, Merchants got a big effort from veteran netminder Don Fleming and rookie Derek Green who blanked the Lakefield Chiefs 3-0 in a game played in Woodville. For the most part of the Greenbank Gambler Fastball Season, 1994 was shaping up as one of the premier years for an organization that has experienced many successes in the past fifteen years. But in the last 6 weeks the injury jinx finally caught up to the Gamblers and hit them where it hurts the most, in the pitching dept. First Jim Chilvers was sidelined for the season in early August due to a water skiing accident and with the pitching logd fully falling on the shoulders of Mark Goreski, the Gamblers were in big trouble when Goreski came up with a sore shoulder. However, Goreski continued to for this season All-Stars by a 3-1 score led by Trevor Till's two hits and Don Beaton"s bases loaded double. Game two the club wasted a two hit pitching performance by Mark Goreski, as they dropped a 1-0 decision to Oakville. Gpreski walked two batters in the first inning and Oakville scored the only run of the game on a two out single up the middle. Goreski stopped them cold after the first inning but Greenbank failed to score and left seven men on base including a bases loaded situation. Game three against the host Brantford Tornadoes, dgoked like a sure wits for' the Gagfiblers as they gunned down the third out at home plate in the seventh inning with a 5-4 lead. Catcher Paul Goreski blocked the plate pitch and last Thursday night in Greenbank Park he pitched well enough to win as he held the Scarborough Royals to only two runs, but the Gamblers (who played well defensively) could not solve the pitching of the Royals Blair McBratney and were ghut out by a 2-0 score and eliminated from the City League Playoffs. Greenbank were the 1993 League Champions and finished and applied the tag which would end the game, but the umpire saw the play differently and called the runner safe to tie the game at 5-5. A major dispute followed (including some Greenbank coaching ejections) but the game went into extra innings and in the bottom of the tenth inning . Brantford pushed across the in first place during the 1994 Regular Season but the loss to Scarborough puts Oshawa Flying Squirrels and h Royals in this years final. The past weekend saw the Gamblers in Brantford for the 0.A8.A. Men's "A™-"A" Championship and while the team played excellent defense they failed to get the key hits that would give them a shot at the Ontario Senior Title. In this game the Gamblers out hit Brantford by a 10-5 margin but they couldn't come up with the key hits that would have moved them into contention for an Ontario championship. However on the entire season the Greenbank Club éould not be too disappointed even though they missed out on some of their goals and expectations. So, it's a six month rest for the Gambler players before the 1995 season rolls around next April when the call goes out again.... "Play Ball".
