od haa Christie to run again for Regional seat Yvonne Christie will be asking Scugog voters to send her back to Durham Region Council for a third straight term. The veteran politician ended speculation in some parts that she might be going after the Mayor's chair when she announced Friday she will be running again for the Scugog seat on Regional council. "Certainly, I had contemplated running for Mayor this time," she told the Citizen in an interview. However, her decision to seek another term as Regional rep was based on several factors. She wants to be able to devote as much time as possible to projects in Scugog such as the p of lagodn treat system in Port Perry and an overhaul of the water supply, system in Blackstock. And she added, "if you are mayor, you don't have the same opportunity to speak up nll say exactly what's on yourmmind." The much-awaited expansion to the sewage treatment system for Port Perry will likely start next year and be completed in 1997. Durham Region has put the money (about $4.8 million) into its capital forecast, but Mrs. Christie said "I want to make sure that money does not get transferred elsewhere." One big issue that will come back in front of Regional council, she said, is garbage. Mrs. Christie is in that no matter who wins the next provincial election, the search for landfill sites in the GTA will end up in the lap of Regional councillors. She notes that the Interim Waste Authority has spent some $60 million to date and is virtually no closer to opening a landfill now than it was when it started four years ago. Municipal politicians at both levels are going to have to cope with more down-loading from the provincial government in the next three years and reductions in provincial grants that will impact on everything from road repairs to recreation and cultural activities. Stating that she "will not see Scugog Township dis- advantaged in any way," she said her experience, knowledge and ability to get the attention of bureaucrats and fellow Fall Home Owner Special! One local issue in this year's election involves a new lease between Scugog Township and the Port Perry Fair Board. Mrs. Christie said she favours anew lease, but *it has to be fair to both sides." She said she sees nothing wrong with a two year "escape clause" which would let either the Township or the Fair Board get out of the lease on two years written notice. That, however, has not been acceptable to the Fair Board who have asked for a ten year lease with no escape clause. Mrs. Christie said it is simply good business practise on the part of the Township, which owns the 22 acre Port Perry fairgrounds, to include an escape clause in any new lease. As for the allegation made by "the Fair Board that the grounds are being considered for an PRET » Looking ahead over the next three years, Mrs. Christie said one major issue for Scugog will be how to maintain services, fix roads etc. while subsidies d 8he also said there will Christie scoffed at this. "There is no un-disclosed development. There has never n any mention of this," she stated firmly. As chairman of the Township's finance committee she said "money has not been wasted the last three years," and there have been virtually no increases in property taxes. She defended the d by be pressure on municipalities once the Social Contract expires. A long time resident of Scugog, Mrs. Christie was first elected to Township council as a Ward 1 rep, then eompleted two straight terms as Scugog's rep at the Regional level.
