Local gun owners join rally in Ottawa Gun owners who mar¥hed on Parliament Hill last Thursday afternoon are pleased that they were able to deliver their message loud and clear to the federal government. But they are not so sure if that message got through to the man who is their primary target: Justice Minister Allan Rock who will present the _ Commons with new gun regulations of some kind this fall. | "I think we got our message across, but I'm not certain that he (Mr. Rock) was very reteptive to it," said John Williams of Port Perry, one of over 100 gun owners from Scugog and area among the more'than 10,000 who marched ' to Parliament Hill last week. They actually took a double- edged message-to Parliament Hill last week: law abiding gun owners are adamantly opposed to any kind of a ban on handguns or a national registry of all firearms; and they want federal politicians to crack down on anyone who uses a firearm to commit a crime. The mass rally in Ottawa, which drew national media attention, was organized by shooting clubs and recreatiqgists from the Durham 'area. ,+ Mr. Williams said he was "absolutely delighted" with the numbers who showed up and indicated that law abiding gun owners are prepared to march again on Parliagent Hill if necessary. He also suggested that people who own guns for a variety of sporting pursuits (hunting, target shooting, collecting) are now united in their opposition to further controls imposed by government. "We have no choice now but to stick together," he told the Citizen. 2 The contingent from the Scugog area left Port Perry at 6:00 o'clock Thursday morning on two coaches from Kerr Bus Lines. In all, 300 buses from all over Ontario carried gun owners to the nation's capital that day and many others arrived in private vehicles. Many wore bright orange t- shirts with the words "1 of 7 million responsible. gun owners." * : Others had the letters FED UP (Firearms Enthusiasts Demand Unbjased Policies) on their shirts and most of the marchers carried placards with the same FED UP message. The march, through the streets of Ottawa-to the Hill took almost 40 miisiutes and was orderly from start to finish. March organizers went to eat lengths to make sure the march stayed orderly and even demanded that a couple of offensive home-made signs be left behind.
