Biazers/Phantoms yet to suffer a defeat Great weather and great action was the order of the day as the "boys of winter" took to the ice for week 3 in the SHL. When the final buzzer sounded, just the Harrison Blazers and the Pineridge Phantoms remained as undefeated teams in this young season and as luck would have it, these same two teams meet next Sunday to settle the first place issue! Game 1 saw the J & D Hawks grab their first victory of the season with-a 4-2 victory over the Compton Comets who are now winless in the three outings! The Hawks jumped out to an early 3 goal lead on markers | by "Captain" Callery, Carl Durward and Rick Hope. The Comets came back with an unassisted effort by Willy Edwards midway through the second period but this game belonged to J & D as both teams traded goals in the final frame. Peter Lane had the final tally for the Hawks while assists on the day went to Durward, Lane, Chris Brain, Dennis Lycett and Ed Olsen. The final scoring play of the day for the Comets saw Mike McQuade pot one from Bill Weisflock and Ken Davison. Dennis Lycett admitted that last week's tally should have been credited to Ritchie Lefort. However, no one is really concerned since it is good to see Dennis back in the league after sitting out last season with a serious leg fracture! This proved to be not enough however, as the high-flying Monsma Chargers flexed their scoring muscles with 3 unanswered tallies to take a 3-1 victory and boost their record to 2 wins and 1 tie in the 3 games to date. The Monsma gang had a goal from Bill Bfidge assisted by Jim Duncan and Brad Hurst, and then later in the game a marker from Duane Bronson assisted"by Paul VanCamp and John Robertson. However, the turning point in the game was their second goal by big Jack Monsma who broke in all alone and scored what turned out to be the winner on a man-short play with just 1 second remaining in the second period! How about that sports fans?! . Game 3 saw 2 undefeated teams from Week 2 square off! On this day it was that strong Harrison Blazers dumping the Pizza Delight Devils 6-2. Post game conversations indicated that the next time these two teams face each other on November 27 could be a contest that the fans won't want to miss! For the Blazers, it was the powerful tandem of John Harman and Darcy Milligan doing the damage as Milligan led with a hat-trick and an assist. For the Devils it was Ken Smart Sr. from Mike "Disco" Driscoll and Brian "Red" Stevenson, and late in the third, Todd "Healey from Stevenson to complete the Pizza Delight scoring for the day. Game 4 saw the Taylor Aces look for their first victory of the season against the Crandells Gamblers but it was not to be as the Gamblers handed the Aces a 5-3 pasting! The Aces jumped out to an earl 3-1 lead at the end of period 1. On a pair of goals by < "Legend" Sheehey and a single from Rick Campbell, but that was the end of their scoring story! Campbell, Ken Little, Al Bonner, Mike Kane, Mark Pehlemann and sponsor, Wayne Taylor each notched single assists. The final 2 frames belonged to the Gamblers as they took over to snatch the victory and a respectable 1-1-1 record. Mark Decosta had a pair of goals with singles 40 Henry Forderer, Ken Jeffrey and Carl Durham. Robert Evans had a big day with 3 assists while Decosta and Dave Bourgeois counted 2 each, and singles went to Jeffrey, Durham, Bryan Norton and Bob Partington. Game 5 saw the usual crowd take to their positions on "the rail" to see the Pineridge Phantoms battle it out with the Van World Sharks. This proved to be the game of the day as both teams decided on a rather physical tone! However, at the buzzer it was the Pineridge Boys humbling the Sharks with a 4-0 victory and a share of first place "with the Harrison Blazers. Shawn Parker gained the +shutout while in front of him Clarence Stephenson, complete with new pants, notched 2 and Bill VanCamp and Jim Fowler scored singles. Lee Steeves had 2 assists while Fred Moffatt, Brian Samis, Steve Fox and Sean Fewer had single helpers. Once again, honesty came to light as Lee Steeves set the record straight in informing those interested that he did not score in last week's victory over the Fitzgerald Clippers. With the days getting shorter and the possibility of an N.H.L. strike next week, don't forget that the SHL offers great hockey action each Sunday free of charge!
