3 BE C wey" Sougog Citizen -- Tuesaday, Seplember 37, 1004 --7 = 'Port Perry designer featured in Maclean's Paul Barton doesn't mince any words when it comes to his thoughts on how Canada can compete with the world in electronics and other high-tech industries. "We in Canada should be very proud of what Canadians are doing. Canada does not have to take a back seat to anybody (in electronics) Yet people still don't seem to appreciate what is being accomplished here." Mr. Barton, a resident of Port Perry for the last decade has every right to these views He is widely recognized as one of the top designers of high quality speakers, and PSB Speakers are now sold in nearly a dozen countries Haheskers are regularly reviewed in technical trade journals. And in the cufrent edition (Sept. 26 to Oct. 3) of Maclean's magazine, he is featured in a full page article on Home Theatre, which he describes as the "fastest growing segment of sound reproduction for the home." Many people have heard of home theatre and those who have not, just have to look at an ad or look at a new piece of hi-fi gear to see words like Surround Sound or Dolby Pro-Logic Home Theatre, in a nutshell, he says, is the ability to playback movies in the home the way yoy would experience them in the theatre Paul Barton of Port Perry with one of his own PSB speakers. Mr. Barton Is featured In the current edition of Maclean's magazine. See story above. Mr. Barton said he was very flattered when first approached by Maclean's about the possibility of an article The article was prepared by Ross Laver, a senior writer with the magazine, and involved a series of questions and answers with Mr. Barton about speakers and home entertainment systems "The article is certainly a good opportunity for me," he told the Citizen last week in an interview at his Port Perry home He has had a life-long interest in music and electronics and built his first speaker while still a high school student in his home town of Kitchener He is now chief designer and vice president engimeering and design with PSB Speakers, a subsidiary of Lenbrook Industries of Pickering The name PSB Speakers, which Mr. Barton founded in his early 20's while a student at Waterloo University, 18 recognized in the industry and among consumers for quality. About 40 per cent of the products are sold in Canada, another 40 per cent are sold in the United States and the remainder in Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, mainland China, Malaysia, Norway and Bermuda And Mr. Barton said he is confident of future markets in such countries as Japan, England, Germany and Italy, all of which have a strong tradition of supporting "home grown" electronics products Canadian electronics, he said, continue to be on the leading edge of technology the world over. But like so many things Canadian such as film, music, acting, even sports, success often came only after recognition south of the border Slowly, those attitudes are changing here in Canada, and as Mr. Barton said Canadians should never have to take a back seat to anybody.
