LL Scugog Citizen = Tuesday, October 4 1994 954 --13 > PPHS students get taste of business world When Township Mayor Howard Hall cut a bright red ribbon to officially open the Chamber of Commerce/BIA office.on Queen Streét, there were several Port Perry High School students taking part in the ceremony. No, they were not skipping class that afternoon. In fact, not only were the students present, PPHS principal Sandra Riches and teacher Dave Robinson were also there. The students, about 25, are members of a grade 12 class called Entrepreneurial Studies, taught by Mr. Robinson. It is the first time this course has been offered at PPHS, and as the course title would suggest, it is mostly about business. One aspect of the course is working at the newly opened office of the Chamber of Commerce and BIA (Business Improvement Area) The students have been assigned to special projects such as co-ordinating the Santa Claus Parade, an all-candidates meeting prior to this November's municipal election, and a Christmas Food Drive at their school. They are also working as a liason between the community of Scugog and their school. Heather Malcolm, one of the 25 students in this course, said last week she is enjoying the work outside the classroom. 8he said already she is seeing just how important community events are to the Township of Scugog, and just how much time and effort goes into the organization of such events to make sure they are successful. "The course helps us to stgrt Help for corn crops damaged by herbicide The Crop Insurance Comm. of Ontario will pay claims for shortfalls in production to those growers whose corn crop received some-damage after applying the newly registered herbicide Ultim during a week of extremely hot weather in June. The Commission has received a number of inquiries from farmers about damage to their gorn crop after Ultim was applied. "As long as the insured grower used recommended farm practices and followed the specific instructions on the label, we consider the damage as a loss caused by excessive heat which is an insured peril," said Comm. chair, William Jongejan. Producers who expect their harvested yield to be below their guarantee should contact their district do-ordinator. Growers whose harvested yield exceeds their guaranteed production on their total acreage will not receive a claim payment. » PORT cL F) ¢ Jones ; {3 B A\ New York /* RH Join us for the , GRAND OPENING 229 QUEEN STREET OonCtARrio Lal 1B9 (905) 985-3470 asic © clot! hing "wich AD €Oge SATURDAY, OCTOBER 8th - 10:00 AM 229 QUEEN STREET, PORT PERRY 985-3470 p PERRY Relaxed & Casual featuring ® ESPRIT © MEXX ® PART TWO ® OXFORD @® SATELLITE DRIVE & more. COMMUNITY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL develop some business skills. We are seeing what it takes for a business to be successful," she said. And, she continued, they are learning about organizations like the Chamber of Commerce and the BIA, both of which work to improve the business climate for their memberships. All 25 students in the course spend an hour each morning at the office at 221 Queen Street and their work on special projects will make up a portion of their final mark. It seems to be the best of both worlds. The students get a taste of life outside the classroom, while organization like the of Commerce get to use the talents and energy of senior 'high school students. With the official opening of the new office on Queen Street, the Tourist Info Booth on Water Street will re-locate for the winter. The Chamber of Commerce/BIA office is open weekdays from 9:00 AM til noon, and weekends from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The Scugog Chamber of Commerce and the BIA are o sharing an office at 221 Queen St. The official opening was last Friday and Included grade 12 PPHS students who are taking a course In Entrepreneurial studies.
