Waste Reduction Week A brand new environmental group is starting up in the Scugog area, and while those involved so far are interested in a whole range of issues, all have agreed to pool their efforts on planning for Waste Reduction Week, coming up October 17 - 23. 1994 marks the tenth year that Waste Reduction Week is being sponsored by the Recycling Council of Ontario in communities across the province This year's theme, "Make every week Waste Reduction Week", is a way to remind us that the garbage problem is still far from solved. Although Scugog Township has not budgeted any funds for WRW activities this year, this new small group of volunteers plan to help draw attention to the ongoing garbage crisis, and you can help! Organize a clothing/toy/book exchange at home or at work Hest a fashion show featuring second-hand clothes. Set up a challenge between two households (or streets or businesses) and see who can cut garbage down the most. Donate a prize for the winner of such a challenge. Resolve to take bags, boxes or hampers with you every time you shop. Help distribute copies of the pamphlet "100 Ways to Watch Your Wasteline". Call 985-3225 or 985-1091 for more information about Scugog's new environmental group and/or if you have questions or suggestions about Waste Reduction Week '94 in Scugog Township. Fiddle Club birthday party From page 14 handful of devoted fiddle fans who drove all over the province to hear their favourite music decided it was time to start a club here in Port Perry. They put up $100 each to rent the Port Perry Legion Hall, borrowed some sound equipment for Irwin Smith (on a promise to pay later if the Club was successful) The first night at the Legion was a huge success, said Gibson and seven years later, the Club has never looked back The Club now meets on the last Wednesday of each month at the Islander Hall (Percy Street, Scugog Island) where musicians play their best toe tappin' stuff and folks from all over show up to listen and dance, all for a cover charge of $2. At last week's birthday party, the seven original members who anted up $100 each to get the Club off the ground, were presented with plaques of appreciation, and they got their $100 back as well. The youthful Woods was delighted to be part of the birthday party and he showed why he won the Canadian Open championship in 1993, won the prestigious competition in Pembroke a couple of weeks ago If you see ALEX INGRAM October 6th, 1994, wish him a Happy Birthday! Love - Margy and placed second at the Grand Masters in Ottawa which features only the top five fiddlers from each province. Part of his performance had him fiddling while flat on his back, standing on his head (with help from dad Merv) using a coat hanger for a bow, and even while summersaulting across the e. Woods told the Citizen he began playing the violin at four years of age and studied classical violin for several years. Coming from a musical family he was soon competing in fiddle contests at age seven and by the time he was ten, was consistently winning the 12 and under class Three times he was Canadian champion in the 18 and under novelty class, and these days spends a lot of time on the road performing or competing all over Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba and northern states. He plays just about every kind of music on the fiddle from traditional to semi-classical to Scottish, Irish and even jazz. "I like to see what the crowd is reacting to and then concentrate on that." he said, adding "I also like to improvise on the stage." When he's not performing or teaching, Woods is busy with the family real estate company owned by his mother and father Carolyn and Merv. And he graduated last spring with a degree in business from Brock University. Port Perry Fiddle Club has been going strong for seven years. The Club is dedicated to the preservation of old time music and indeed all kinds of music. The public is more than welcome to come to the Islander the last Wednesday evening of each month to listen to the good sounds, take a few turns around the spacious dance floor and make some new friends who share'a devotian to this kind of music. > Pi Town Hall 187 presents VOICES - The Relyea Family in a Victorian Evening of Song SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15th, 1994 at 8:00 PM Tickets $20. available at the door or at Irwin Smith Music THE FIRST of FOUR CONCERTS.
