Pl we late surprises as election campaign begins There were no last minute surprises as nominations for the municipal elections closed last Friday afternoon at 5:00 PM Ward 3 incumbent councillor Hen Gadsden will get a free ride to a second term as he won his seat by acclamation. But there will be a race for all the other seats on Township council, the Scugog seat at the Durham Board of Education and the seat for Scugog, Brock and Uxbridge on the Catholic School Board, Here's how'the races shape up. Incumbent Mayor Howard Hall is looking for_his third straight three-year term. He is being challenged by long time Scugog resident ® and busipessman David Maleolmy who is making his first vent into local politics. For the Regional seat, incumbent Yvonne Christie is seeking another term in office. And she is being challenged by Glenn Malcolm, a Nestleton resident who held the Ward 4 seat for a single term and was defeated three years ago in a close race-for the Mayop's chair. Glenn is the older brother of David and both are sons of former Sougog Mayor Lawrence Malcolm. In Ward 4, incumbent David Dietlein has decided not to seek re-election due to health reasons. There gre two candidates in this race--former school board trustee Joyce Kelly and Fred Ford, both from Blackstock. The Ward 3 (Island) seat has the Port Perry Fairboard and works in a volunteer capacity with the Scugog Museum. The other Ward 5 candidate is 'Wally Donaldson, a resident of Honey's Beach who is employed as sports editor with the Oshawa Times newspaper. The most names on the ballot will be in the race for the seat on the Durham Board of Fdueati been claimed by Ken Gadsd by acclamation, and in Ward 2, : incumbent Marilyn Pearce is sdeking a third term on council. She is facing a challenge from Jim Grosvenor, a long time resident of the Township who is retired from the North York Fire Department. Ward 1 has three candidates in th race. Incumbent Ken Carruthers is looking for a second team on council, and is facing a challenge from independent businessman Barry Johnston and Doug Moffatt, a consultant to courier companies. The newly created Ward 5 which runs from Queen Street north to Whitfield Road, has attracted two candidates, both seeking election for the first time.
