Hall, Port Perry Z Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, October 25, 1994 --25 4 Bateman creations at Farndale Gallery by Heather McCrae "Three Bags Full" is a delightful display of Wendy Bateman's creations, all made from recycled clothing Land plastics. Over the past ten years Wendy and her husband, Sid, have reclaimed over 4,000 pounds of wool and mohair scraps, used coats and other clothing. From these treasures Wendy cut the cloth into strips and by twining and braiding these pieces she started a new career of creating area rugs and seat cushions. The story of how "Three Bags Full" started is an amusing one. About three years ago when Wendy was in Thermopolis, Wyoming, teaching weaving, she and Sid had a few free hours one day and were touring the town. Out in front of a Goodwill store a sign read "Today Only, Three Bags Full for $3.00" Inside they went, "Three Bags Full" the recycled creations of Wendy Bateman are on display at the Kent Farndale Gallery. Wendy, a native of Port Perry, Is wearing a jacket made from discarded clothing. See story. and quickly scooping up three bags of old garments, the shocked clerk asked Sid "doesn't'she want to try any of them on?" "No thanks" was the replay as Wendy already had a plan. That idea was to call her future shows that displayed her works of art made out of old clothing. "Three Bags Full", On display in the Kent Farndale Gallery at the Scugog Memorial Library is the jacket made out.of those three bags of clothing. Sewn on this creation are 1100 buttons from those clothes. Wendy says there's still room on the back for at least another 400 buttons. When Wendy's Aunt Winn died the weaving artist packed up all the older lady's clothing, bringing them back to her studio. She said "after stripping and saving buttons and zippers from 45 sweaters, skirts, slacks, coats, blouses, housecoats and scarves, we had fourteen pounds of cloth strips from chenille", - That chenille was woven and made a into a colourful rug. "The Labels on my aunt's old clothing were saved and as many as possible were sewn into the hems of the finished rug". A call to entry by the Ontario Genealogical Society for the first "Threads of Family History" - a juried exhibition of textile crafts relating to family history, prompted Wendy to enter this memory rug. She says :"we were pleased to receive the 'Judges Special Award' at the Summer of 1993 Conference". This memory rug and several other colourful Bateman creations are on display in the Kent Farndale Library until November 11. Wendy, an accomplished master spinner and fibre artist, is a native of Port Perry, With the help of her husband, Sid Brinkman, Wendy does her weaving at Fibres Web Studio Located on the shores of Blue Hawk Lake just outside the town of Haliburton. \ winter, starting in November.
