33 -- Scugog Citizen ~ Tuesday, October 25, 1994 -- Blazers could be an SHL dynasty in the making With all the disturbing news last week surrounding Port Perry, it was good to get back to thg refreshment of home-town hockey in the 8.H.L. The Executive and Players wish a speedy recovery to all those injured in the disaster that upset everyone in our community! - Now to this week's action that saw those Harrison Blazers remain in top spot as the first round of league action is a week away from completion. Game 1 saw the Pineridge Phantoms and the J & D Hawks battle to a 2-2 draw as the sun rose on the first game of Week 8. The Phantoms took a first period lead on a pair of goals by Bill VanCamp with assistg to Sean Fewer and Clarence Stephenson. However, as was seen in the last few weeks, those J & D Hawks never say die, and they battled back in this one on goals by Dave "Pie" Jackson from Ritchie LeFort and "Regional" Reg McIntyre, and later Peter Lane from "Captain" Callery to secure the tie and split the points to one each. Both goaltenders, Sean Parker SPORT STATS! 'Scugog Hockey League for the Phantoms, and Ray Gibson for the Hawk8 stood their ground to make this one of the best 6:45 am games this year. Game 2 ended in exactly the same result as the Pizza Delight Devils and the Taylor Aces also played to a 2-2 draw. With the Aces still waiting for a full bench to arrive, the action went end-to-end through a scoreless first period, due to fine goaltending by John Mooge in the Ace Cage and Jon Rensink filling in for Doug MacSween in the Devil Cage. The lone marker of period 2 belonged to the Devils as Ken Smart Sr. potted one from "Bubba" McEachern and Tim Ashbrftige. Things heated up in the final frame as the Aces took the lead on tallies from Todd Wilbur assisted by "Legend" Sheehey and Ken Little, and then Ken Little on an extra effort play from Bob Beacock and Al Bonnem But the Devils just wouldn't quit and a goal by "Disco" Driscoll frofn John Mackey dnd Ken Smart Jr. gave the league their second tie of the day with both teams certain that they deserved the win! This set the stage for Game 3, which had first place overall honours on the line, as the Harrison Blazers took to the ice against the Monsma Chargers. When the final buzzer sounded, it was those amazing Blazers continuing to silence the critics and live up to the "Grovie Pick" as they downed the second place Chargers 5-2! The Chargers drew first blood on a goal by Tony Oxley from Jason Warner and Paul VanCamp, but then was all Blazers as they scored 5 in a row, before Charger defenseman, Lee Wilbur netted one from Bill Bridge. The Blazer attack saw Dave Milton with a pair and singles to Larry Jackson, Dale Bronson and Darcy Milligan. Milligan along with Daw Roth and John Harman had 2 assists each, while Bronson and Jim Park collected single horiours to keep the Blazers firmly atop the league with an undefeated record, and one game remaining in the first round of league action! Game 4 saw the Van World Sharks give the Crandells Gamblers a real run for their money! To date, the Sharks have suffered the effects of injury and attendance, but the addition of Greg Fitzgerald for injured defenseman, Doug Seeley, and Mark Jobb for sidelined forward Gary Lance, gave those Sharks the lift they needed to play exciting hockey and narrowly lose to the Gamblers by a 2-1 score: The Crandell's crew had an unassisted marker from Carl Durham and a goal late in the third period from Mark Decosta assisted by Durham and Glenn As of Octolgr 23, 1994 Black Division TEAM: . Game 5 rounded out a full slate of close SHL play as the Compton Comets doubled the Fitzgerald Clippers 4.2. The Clippers have missed the scoring power of Larry Pilkey in the past few weeks, and no doubt his return to action should turn this Clipper team around! The Comet attack saw Jeff Johnstone, Willy Edwards, Dave Dickson. and Ron Zaparanuik each find the net for their third victory of the season. Mike McQuade had a pair of assists with singles to Paul Goreski, Zaparanuik and Edwards to secure the victory. The Fitzgerald Gang saw replies by Harvey Williams from Jody Peters, and then Doug Bronson from Williams and téam sponsor, Carl Fitzgerald to complete their attack. As a league, we have been concerned about the serious condition of league member, Kevin Reid. Kevin has been a long-time member of the SHL and now has a long battle ahead of him. A few tickets are still available for the Benefit Dance next weekend to assist Kevin and his family at this time. Please call Wayne Norton if you would like to attend this event at Manvers Hall next weekend. The SHL wishes Kevin all the best and a continued concern for his recovery.
