It is high time that these men and women got some support for a job well done and a bit of support from all of us to make their @fficult line of work just a bit easier. . Anyone who was around the Port Perry Plaza in the minutes and hours after the bank robbery and shooting will have seen' police officers working under intense stress and strain. Five people had been rushed to hospital with gun- shot wounds, a bank had been robbed, at least two ginmen were on the loose jn residential areas of Port Perry-- gunmen who had shown no hesitation in aiming a high powered weapon and pulling the trigger. The police presence in the community that night was large, and well it should have been in light of the circumstances. Thanks to a tip from a citizen who spotted a car making a quick turn in front of road-block. The licence was traced to Kingston where two arrests were made the next morning. Thankfully, the police have the electronic means to m&e quickly. The Durham Police force at this moment is under-staffed by about 40 personnel; the Social Contract resulted in budget roll-backs this year. This is totally unacceptable in this day and age. We demand that these people put sheir lives on the line to «protect our property and our lives. Can we afford not to provide them with the personnel and equipment to handle the worst case scenarios--like the gituation at a crowded shopping plaza in Port Perry on a Thursday evening? By the way, the Police Mobile Command remains at the Plaza this week and police have issued a public appeal to anyone who may have seen anything that night to come forward with the information. It could be important. And next time you see a police officer you might want to offer a word or two of support and thanks for a tough job. Zero Tolerance With Halloween coming up this coming Monday, Durha Region Police have issued & stern warning that there will "Zero Tolerance" when it comes to any kind of criminal activity. In recent years Halloween gpranks" have become more and more serious where eggs have been tossed moving vehicles, windows smashed and fires set. Anyone caught doing this kind of stuff or anything outside the law will be hustled off to Police HQ in Oshawa and held overnight for a bail hearing the next day. And they mean business. Young people who find themselves in custody will be charged and their parents notified to go and get them, no matter what the hour of the night, In light of the terrible incident in Port Perry last Thursday night in which the Bank of Montreal was robbed and five persons, including three officers were shot and wounded, members of the Police department are not in any mood to tolerate Halloween pranks that get out of hand and damage to property or endanger the safety of anybody. This is not a plea for young people to sit home Halloween Night and stare at the walls. But i is a plea to use some common sense and understand that "Zero Tolerance" means just that. This community is only now just starting to get over the shock of what happened last Thursday night when five people were shot and two others held hostage. The people of Scugog can be thankful they are not attending funerals this week ag-those shot are recovering from their wounds. Can we make Hall a more enjoyable experience this year? Have some fun but not at the expense of others. (@KASPECSIA SCLGOE CITIZEN . | TELL YA IT'S NOT SAFE ouT THERE ANYMORE... Is Oshawa next? ' officers at scene of bank shooting To the Editor: r Human nature allows us to second guess every day events and the people involved in these events. Unfortunately, most pesple do it without knowing all the facts, We hear a lot of people saying, wondering or asking, "Why didn't the officers do this, or do that." Well we don't know why the events unfolded the way they did or what would have happened if events had folded a little different and or high water" ng, Ottawa gave a total of $40 million in foreign aid to Haiti.....a French speaking country. Why not food or agricultural tools? The army boss just deposed by the: United States was reported to have left in luxury with milliongof dollars and $12,000 monthly income from his three rented homes in Haiti. Ottawa spends about $2 billion each year on foreign aid charities neither does anyone else. If you haven't been there and done it, you have no idea how quick the decision-making process is under these circumstances. We think all the officers, especially the three that were shot, showed extreme courage and, like it or not, their quick actions prevented further death or injury. , As one disguised robber, wearing a balaclava and aiming a semi automatic rifle, stood outside the door of our store and pointed the gun at one of our employees standing only five feet away in the store, it was her feeling that she was going to be shot or possibly taken hostage. We feel that it was Constable Mooy's courageous actions that may have saved her from, great harm. Since our staff and some of our customers were so closely affected, we would like to pass our sincere thanks along to the injured officers and all the other officers involved. There are not enough good things said about our Police Force. We want you to know that we appreciate everything you did. Pat and Peter Kneale Paulmac's Pet Foods. |
