Council to Ottawa get tough Vol. 4, No. 14 CIRC. 13,800 40 pages Tuesiiay, November 1, 1994 = on crime In the wake of the vicious shooting spree October 20 in Port Perry that left five wounded, Scugog Township council is sending a stern message to politicians in Ottawa and Queens Park: get tough with crime and criminals. Council unanimously adopted a five part resolution Monday afternoon which expresses anger and outrage at what happened when two gunmen robbed the Bank of Montreal and shot five people in the process shortly after 7:00 PM on October 20. "We have to tell the prime minister and the justice minister that we have had enough," said Ward 2 rep Marilyn Pearce who drafted the resolution. "I want (Durham MP) Alex Shepherd to bring this (resolution) forward in the House of Commons .as a petition from all the people of Scugog," said Pearce, adding that never has she seen so much fear in the people of this community as there was the night of the shootings at the Port Perry Plaza. The resolution passed by the council deals strictly with tougher crime provisions and does not ask for stricter laws on firearms. "Gun control would not 'have ' helped at all in this instance," noted councilor Christie. * The resolution notes that one of the men accused of the shootings and the robbery was free on parole after serving two-thirds of a sentence for a previous violent Yvonne crime. The resolution calls for *changes to the criminal justice system in order to get tough with violent crime and criminals. *changes to the parole system which would not allow parole for criminals convicted of violent crimes. *an end to plea bargaining in gun-related crimes. *changes in the judicial system to protect the rights of a law abiding sdciety over the rights of a convicted criminal. *new measures to protect the authority and lives of our Police officers. Just prior to adopting the resolution Monday afternoon, council heard from Port Perry resident Michael Dunn, who was in the Bank of Montreal when the robbery took place and bank manager Al Knight was shot in the lég at close range. "Something happened to me on that evening that frightened me, angered me, distressed me and frustrated me," he told the council. "The fact that two low-lifes threatened the lives of the nine people who happened to be in the bank at the time frightened me. The fact that twa thugs shot five people during this hold-up angered me. The fact that three police officers were shot trying to , do their job distressed me. The fact that as an individual, I could not do anything at the time to stop this violent crime, frustrated me," said Mr. Dunn Turn to page two w Ward candidates y meeting Nov. 2 Scugog Township voters will get the chance to hear what the ward candidates have to say at a meeting slated for this Wednesday evening (Nov. 2) at the Latcham Centre in Port Perry.
