Incumbent Mayor Howard Hall, who is seeking a third straight term and challenger David Maleolm stated their positions clearly at a candidates meeting at Port Perry High School last week. Mr. Malcolm said he is in favour of renewing the lease (the current lease expires in 1997) with the Fair Board and "keeping the Fairgrounds Get tough From page one who moved here seven years ago. As for whether the Township, which owns th® grounds, should insist on a so- a escape clause in the lease, Mr. Malcolm quipped "the only clause we need in Scugog is Santa at Christmas time." Mayor Hall told the meeting there should be a termination clause that would allow either side out of the lease. He suggested it could be a two to five year period. "We are running the municipality like a business and there is always an escape clause in any lease for both sides," he stated. on crime am sure this feeling is shared by many Port Perry residents," he told the council. Federal Justice Minister Allan promised new legislation this year dealing with firearm registration and the admini8tration of justice in the country. bd The Mayor also said the Township has never had any kind ofan offer to purchase the fairgrounds and "councii has never considered selling" the property. - On the other issue of the proposed new community facility/banquet hall at the Scugog Arena, Mr. Malcolm stated "if elected, I will do anything in my power to have it stopped. It is too large and it's not needed. It will hurt (business) at the sméller halls in the Township," he said. He went on to suggest the Township should halt the plans for the new community facility and move ahead with construction of an indoor swimming pool. Mayor Hall said the new facility is not just a banquet hall, but a multi-purpose facility that will get a lot of use day and night. In his opening address to the meeting, Mr. Malcolm called the facility a "monumental banquet hall in an unfortunate location." He said the Township must concentrate on job creation and fiscal responsibility. Job creation should be in the light manufacturing sector, he said.
