2 starting - to The Port Rerry MoJacks spent a lot of time in the Bowmanviifle Eagle end of the rink in Junior C action at the Scugog Arena Sunday night. And It paid off In a big way as the MoJacks downed the Eagles 5-1 to hand them thelr first loss of the season. Just as Important, the MoJack win snapped a three game losing skid. See story for detalls. Midget Islanders can get used to those 8-3 scores On Wednesday, October 19, the Port Perry Canadian Tire Midget Islanders continued their pre-season action and fine-tuned their offensive skills with an 8-3 thrashing of Manvers. This contest was billed to be a close one, a real barn burner, an action packed defensive struggle, but that just didw't happen. Port came out of the gate on fire, scoring three goals in the first six minutes of play, courtesy Greg Thompson, Matt Phillips and Eric Lucyk. This left the Manvers players dumbfounded and hungry for some respect. Unfortunately for the Islanders their foes got themselves right back into the game and at the 13:06 mark of the third period the game was squared at three. But not to fear Port's snipers were near. Lucyk scored again, while Carl Phoenix potted a pair, and so did Devon Blair. Hey, that rhymes, sort of. Credited with assists in this game were, Jon Jamieson, four; Kevin Gray two; Jason Logan, two; Tim Fitzpatrick, two; Trevor Smith, two; Todd Parry, one; Lucyk, one; and Phoenix, one. Also strong in this game was the dynamic duo of Brian Bickmore and Jamie Trick as they both played superb in net, stopping shot after shot. The following Sunday the Islanders were in Beaverton for a tilt with the Blades. Port played this game very similar to their last one. Things were close in the early going, but Port eventually pulled away for another 8-3 shellacking Cable Crew gets On Oct 28th at 8:00 pm, Compton Cable played an exciting exhibition game against Stouffville The Compton Cable squad is get. together, becoming more competitive. Mark Carnaghan stood up and stopped a 3 on 0 break away with confidence. Todd Lance and Matthew Roth were solid on defence Kyle Mullins, Derek Goreski, Keenan _ Geer, and Nelson Langmaid provided ample offence but couldn't find the twine. Stouffville was vidforious. Saturday, Oct.20th, Compton better each game, Caledon Hawks. The Compton players hung tough led by the hot glove of goalie Leo Taillon: He had great defensive help from Micheal Lycett and Shane Jeffrey. Derek Goreski was a leader with two- way play, and also assisted on the lone Port Perry goal by Cassidy Weber. Jeff Tomcheski and Tyson Savage were persistent in moving the puck toward the opposing team. What a difference a week makes as Compton Cable's team play resulted in a closer match going down 6-1 rather than the Cable played a h with he double-digits the Hawks aged ious week. % The line of Carl Phoenix, Matt Brown and Tim Fitzpatrick was hitting on all cylinders this night as each had a multi-point game. Brown got things rolling with help from Phoenix and not long after Brown returned the favour with Fitzpatrick chipping in. This trio would add a third goal in the second frame as Phoenix bulged the twine again, set.up by his buddies. Also scoring were Greg Thompson, Todd Parry, Jon Jamieson, Eric Lucyk and Trevor Smith. Also appearing on the score sheet were Kevin Gray, Kent Taylor; Mark Brownson and Rob Gracie with assists. The game had to be called with 2:48 left in the third period due to the over zealousness of a few Beaverton 'players and some of their younger fans. Both. Brian "Bickmore-and Jamie Trick were sharp when called upon between the pipes. The next night the Islanders began league play in Manvers With pure talent Port tallied w another eight goals and only mllowed one to win their third straight. Devon Blair, Mark Brownson, Tim Fitzpatrick, Lueyk, Gray and Phoenix each had assists. The coaches of this years team are Steve Thompson, Gary Smith, Mike Tripp and manager Eric Donnelly. Port's next action is Wednesday, November 2, against Mariposa. After three consecutive losses the Port Perry MoJacks finally stopped the bleeding Sunday night at the Scugog Arena as they clipped the wings of the Bowmanville Eagles 5-1 in front of the largest crowd so far this season It was the first loss for the league leading Eagles and MoJack head coach Brad Menzies said later it was the best effort yet from his team. There was nothing fancy about the way the MoJacks fashioned their 5-1 victory, just old fashioned ham and eggs style hockey---bottle up the opposition in the neutral zone and take advantage of the segring chances when they come along. And it was a badly needed victory as the MoJacks were reeling after losses to Uxbridge Bruins Friday night 7-2 and 2-1 on Saturday at the hands of the Sutton Ice. Against the Eagles, Port Perry got things going mid-way through the first as Keith Leslie tipped in a shot from the left point by Steve Staniland. Eagles got their lone marker of the game early in the middle period as Curtis Hudgins was set up by Dave Real. But less than two minutes later, MoJacks went ahead to stay as Paul Kelly combined with Steve Laird and Ryan Ridgeway to beat Barry Crawford in the Bowmanville nets. MoJacks were on the power play with about two minutes left in the second when Todd Dennis deflected a shot behind Crawford with Leslie getting the assist. The third period belonged totally to the MoJacks as they held the high flying Eagles to just four shots on Rick Hutchinson. In fact, they rarely allowed the visitors to move across the blue line. And they were not finished in the scoring column either as Dennis notched his second of the match at 6:46 with help from Brad Bagshaw and Mike Pigeau « 'Nicest goal of the game was at 10:20 to make the score 5-1 as Gavin Cochrane fed a pass to Pigeau in the corner and he moved into the slot before dishing off to Leslie who slammed the disc past Crawford before he Could make a move. MoJack Steve Laird and Eagle Dave Real got early trips to the showers for a scrap in the second period. MoJacks out-shot the visitors 37-24 in this one--a prétty good Keith Leslie, two goals and two assists. indication of the territorial edge they enjoyed all game. On Saturday night in Sutton, MoJacks couldn't put the puck in the ocean as they bowed 2-1 to the Ice. Captain Gavin Cochrane managed the lone marker with help from Steve Laird and Todd Stirling. Friday night's game in Uxbridge was in a word, ugly as far as the MoJacks were concerned. They fell behind the Bruins 2-0 in the first and were never able to get their game going after that. Ian Titterton and Ryan Ridgeway did the scoring with Gavin Cochrane chipping in with a pair of assists. SLAPSHOTS: Head coach Menzies said after Sunday's victory the MoJacks may have been a bit complacent in the losses to Uxbridge and Sutton, but he called the effort against the Eagles the best so far this season. "I hope they get themselves ready for all our games," he said. The status of MoJack defenseman Kevin McDonald is uncertain at this time due to work and school commitments. And Jason Cochrane, one of the best two way players in the league, will be out of the lineup for a few weeks after hurting his elbow in an intra-mural game at university Modacks are idle until this Friday evening when they hit the road for a tilt with the Bobeaygeon Bullets. And then on Sunday evening at the Scugog Arena they host the same Bullet- with game time set for 7:00 PM. Notice paper. to the noon deadline.
