Ralph Sadler has life-l by Heather McCrae Whether driving, shoeing or carving them, horses have * always been a large part of Ralph Sadler's life. As a farm boy Ralph grew up with horses and, in his teens, he learned the trade of the blacksmith from a friend. After working a few years he met Leona Williams of Nestleton and the couple married in 1936, taking over the Williams' 100 acre homestead. Forty acres of the farm had previously been sold for development on Lake Scugog's shoreline and was aptly named Williams Point. Having a love for horses, Ralph started competing at the local fairs. "They (horses) weren't Pr that good" he told the Citizen recently, "but I enjoyed showi: to do the job" and the animal horse's foot. That fall Ralph ng them. I was learning all the time and the more | learned it just made me want to get a better horse". In 1943 he found that "better" horse. That animal was thirteen year old Fairview Kingseal Jr., recognized as the best hackney stallion in the province but because it had a crooked foot was used for breeding only. Consequently, he traded one'of his good horses for the old" stallion. He told the Citizen he couldn't get a vet for miles around to castrate the old fella. "Because of his age he was a high risk" Ralph smiled, "but I convinced Dr. Cam MacMaster very little difficulty. "A Doctor of Optometry (Optometrist) is an independent primary health care provider who specializes in examination, diagnosis, treatment, management and prevention of diseases and disorders of the visual system, the eye and associated structures as well as the diagnosis of related Systematic conditions." \ Three thin layers compose the tear film to coat and protect the eye: 1) The outer lipid layer provides an oily surface to retard tear evaporation; without it the tears would evaporate 15 times faster. 2) The middle aqueous layer is 98% water. 3) The inner mualn layer coats the eye surface, allowing the other layers to form a film; without it tears would bead up like rain on a waxed car. Tears are more than just water. When tears lack one of the important components above, or when too few tears are produced, the tear film breaks down producing dry spots on the cornea. This causes dry eye symptoms - a feeling of itchiness, grittiness, a burning sensation, and discomfort. This also causes an eye reflex to secrete more tears, but they wash away without coating the eye, allowing your eyes to still feel dry, yet watery. Aside from contact lens wear, the most prevalent cause of dry eye is natural aging. At age 65, the eye produces 60% fewer tears than at age. 18. Dry eye can also result from the disruption of the blinking reflex; dicati such as antihistamines, decongestants and heart medications; vitamin A deficiency; and envi | factors (sun, wind, smoke, electric heating, air conditioners). Inflammatory stemic diseases such as arthritis and colitis are associated with dry eye. . : Dr. Wotkman provides ocular-visual examinations that assess the lubricating ability of the tear film using a yellow dye applied to the eye in conjunction with a biomicroscope. |__There is no cure for dry eye. Treatment includes a variety of artificial tear products. If you are diagnosed with dry eye Dr. Workman can recommend the artificial tear treatment for you.
