wap Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, November 8, 1994 -- 23 - The naked Ostrich replies to Mother To the Editor: The Naked Ostrich replies to Mother First, spell my name right Second, read by first letter Where do | attack any person - or mother -- by name (as you do?)? Third, "pompous", "arrogant", "vacuous" oh, probably -- just hangover from all that "bloated education". But 1 can read, write, and cipher -- can you, mother? Where did | say "things are progressing along quite nicely, thank you very much" (note snide tae of mother)? And nowhere do | "pat myself on the back"; it's not my style. | prefer to do for others, not TOrthem. Get your facts straight before leaping lemming- like into the fray. That said] want to thank you very much for telling us drained taxpayers and Christians ( | have 40 years service in WASP choirs and a degree from a seriously Baptist University to my credit, among other things) just how it all is. Do you suggest we ignore the fact that native peoples were first in this "once- great country™ Should we not notice the fact that you and the voting public and the politicians that public elected, created and pursued 'multiculturism', mainly as a vote-getting strategy? You invited everyone here, now tend to 'em. Aren't Christians loving and welcoming? Christ said "bring ALL the little children unto me", etc.,etc. Or were those invited only WASPS (who didn't exactly exist as such 2,000 years back in Africa anyway)? To return to your poison-pen missive. Our society IS going to hell, teenage pregnancies are increasing, many high school graduates 'are functionally illiterate and inept at simple arithmetic (many can't even spell it), educational costs are spiralling,"academic competence plummeting" (oh dear, there's "rhetoric masquerading as higher education" again -- all those big words -- would they be pompous?): dead right; | agree Mind-warping away from Judeo-Christian ethics, socglled civil rights awareness, sex-ed, promotion of homosexuality as normal, and no absolutes because teachers are supposedly teaching there is no right or wrong in short, "indoctrinating our children with their New, Age socialistic propaganda" -- that's a heavy-duty accusation levelled against a "working stiff® like myself (read teacher) and others who are only teaching what is brought down from on high (YOUR elected politicians, to wit) I am sick to death, as are most tegchers, of being dumped bn by everyone at every level, of being presented with a media-stuffed, sullen, stubborn child and told to 'fix him/her' 1 can't do a thing with him/her" by a parent oft too busy with personal concerns to get to know the kid as a real human being Then I'm told discipline 1s a civil rights issue and everyone has "rights to privacy". Some parents scream loudly when their child is accused of a naughty act and rush to the kid's RE-ELECT 10WARD defence instead of supporting teachers and encouraging youth to be responsible for their own actions and to practise self discipline (Have you interviewed your candidate on this subject?) Ill also mention the fact that certain folks surely are twisting supposed curriculum content to reflect their own indoctrination intent. For example, just who on earth in Durham is ordered to teach lesbianism (by the way, Lesbos was a lovely Greek Isle inhabited by talented songstresses. Ah, shucks, there goes that "bloated education" again)! Now, as for "personal attacks" mother, yours on me was a beaut. Be careful of your gambling instincts and hang onto that paycheque (you're lucky to have one); you may need it. The shoot-yourself-in-the-foot syndrome works both ways. Your vitriolic (big word) assault on me has done your candidate more harm than good f Lots of good folk in this area know and respect me and are * well aware | carc deeply about kids, community, social issues, personal concerns, and taxes. | pay too -- plenty. But I will not support limited issue candidates no sex ed in schools; "family life" when they're hard-pressed to manage their own; no freedom of choice wasn't this country founded as a Democracy?; and lots of bible bumphf where those fathers begat all over the place with no real concern for morals, to cite a few) -- candidates who say they'll "lower taxes" but propose to "expand existing schools". With what? Reality check here. Hidden agendas -- oh yeah This area is becoming too well known for extreme rightists groups and their Janipulated pupp many fed inf literature from south of the border Talk about "indoctrination™ These power- mongers are well aware of the appeal to often apathetic voters that catch-phrases have: "back to basics", "lower taxes", "traditional family values" (what is that in 1994 anyway?), "social concerns", etc. All that is missing is mom and apple pie -- with a Yankee flag waving behind I repeat. buyer beware; voter, take care. We have to live with what we elect. Can the voting public just imagine a prescribed list} of "approved" candidates Serigin churchgoers and others are Turrently being told to vote for, for example"? Last point; as to the accusation of being an ostrich ("hiding her head in the sand and ignoring this sad state of affairs" -- ostrich don't do that, by the way), "sad", yes, but if you know your critters at all (the tone of your broadside suggests you feel your knowledge to be extensive), you'll be aware that that old bird can kick butt and/or outrun its detractors out of the park should the need arise. It has also furnished elegant plumes for writing (communication) and adornment; or a huge meal. Feast on that. Thank you very, very much for the unintended compliment and endorsement As for "ignoring....affairs", mother, did you ever ring a wrong number! Did you not do your three and a half hours' homework before writing? To close, as Mr. Rogers sang, "It's a lovely day in the neigh- bour-hood....can you spell "LIBEL", kiddies" That's L-A-W- S-U-I-T", mom. I've been advised. The Emperor has clothes.
