=» #4 -- Scugog Citizen - Tuesday, November 8, 1994 _--- Malmont Atoms win two more games On Nov. 4, the Malmont Atom "As hosted the Oshawa Little NHL Bruins. They improved their play execution as the game progressed and then cruised to a 5-0 shutout victory. Goalie Mike Koury registered the big goose egg and flawlessly handled the few tough shots Oshawa managed. In the first period he stopped a low glove side shot to keep the game scoreless. Later in the first period Justin Moffatt got by a defenceman in the neutral zone and made a 2-0n-1 pass to Jeff Tarbotton who got us on the scoresheet. Steve MacLennan alsg, tallied an assist on the play. Later on Dane Gray couldn't get one by the Oshawa goalie tacouvert a 3-0n-1 Port rush. Se Then Dean Van Camp created a turnover in the offensive zone and our shooters couldn't get the puck high into the net where the Bruin goalie was vulnerable. Near the end of the period, Oshawa went on a power play. Steve MacLennan made 2 nice plays at the Oshawa blueline to interrupt their breakouts. Mark Duncan had a near miss from his wing position after a set-up by Mike LeFort Our efforts were finally rewarded as Mike LeFort scored from Jeff Tarbotton and Tyler Houthuys. Trevor then made a good pass to Dean Van Camp who was left totally uncovered in the slot. Mark, Trevor W. and Dean were foiled in a 3-0n-1 rush near the end of the period. In the third period our relentless forechecking and backchecking paid off when Mark lifted a rebound high into the gaping net. Jeff and Trevor W. had another good opportunity on a 2-on-1. Oshawa showed a little bit of recovery at this point and did the subsequent flurry around the Oshawa net was again stymied as "The manager was a scout who signed the best player from a video tape. The coach answers questions in the beer garden after every game while, on the ice, his team Is blazing a trail towards a possible third national championship in four years. They're the Kamloops Blazers and you had better know somebody if you want to see them play. So popular if this junior team in the hear of British Columbia that 4,600 of the 5,000 seats in its coliseum belong to season-ticket holders and the eight game Memorial Cup tournament, to be played there next May, is already sold out. And there's good reason for the loyal following. The Blazers have been to the Western League final six times since 1981 And they've won four titles. They're a blue collar team in a blue collar town and people are pleased to get dressed up to watch them play. The love affair hasn't always been so hot. Junior hockey disappeared from Kamloops from 1977 through '81 and even after it came back, the fans didn't. But as the win total grew, so did the crowds and people began to feel it was really their team "The city didn't care about the team," recalls Bob Brown, who became GM eight years ago. "We got the guys who weren't going to school out inthe community every day meeting kids and business people and after a while, everybody knew the players and got very involved." They still get involved after the game at the traditional coach's interview in the lounge. A hot stove league with audience participation. "We used 10 do it 'cause we had to sell the beer to make a go of it here," chuckles Dan Hay, who will double as coach of the national junior team this year, "Now we just do it 'cause we always have." It tickles the imagination, doesn't it, to think of Pat Burns or Mike Keenan facing a mob full of beer and opinions der a tough loss. Like drawing fans, recruiting has become much easier with championships but the Blazers still went off the board for their captain and leader, Darcy Tucker. He was a 14 year-old filling the nets of Endiang, Alta., when the scouts were split over his potential. They sent a video tape to Brown, who liked all the goals he saw and thought he could smooth the rough edged. Now Tucker Is 19, filling the net for Kamloops and, if they ever play again, he'll likely be doing it for the Montreal Canadiens sometime, too. The Blazers won the Memorial Cup in 1992 and then again last spring. As the host team, they get an automatic berth in the next championship but the a good chance they won't need it although coach Hay plays down the junior juggernaut theory. "We still have room for improvement," he tries to convince, borrowing a line from the test of Coaching 101. It's hard to imagine junior hockey in Kamloops getting much better but if there are improvements to be made, the coach will likely hear about them in the beer garden after the game. "Jim Hughson" is sponsored by some effective forechecking of their own but defenceman Tim Jones made 2 good ive clearing Trenton. With only 8 seconds gone in the game, the Golden Hawks goalie plays to relieve the pressure. Tyler Houthuys and Jamie Smith also backed up Mike Koury's shutout effort from their rearguard positions With the score now 3.0 Dane Gray calmly chipped in the fourth Malmont marker on a loose goalmouth puck shortly after we had missed on a 2.0n-0 breakaway. Assists were by Mike LeFort and , Adam Moynes. Dean Van Cahp scored on a breakaway "deke" play to close out the game sheet. Assists were by Trevor Weisflock and Jamie Smith. All in all this was a good "team" shutout and our Malmont boys clearly deserved the "W". Best Effort nominee by the coaching stafl went to Mark Duncan. On Nov. 6th, the team travelled to dled Dean Van Camp's high wrist shot after Mike Lefort had passed it off. Trenton tied the score at 1 off a 3-0n-2 play. D'Arcy Stephens stoned them in net shortly after with a save from flat out on the ice. Further into the first period Jamie Smith set up Dean who converted a 2-0n-1 with a shot through the *5- hole". Dean scored again late in the period for a natural hat trick on a screen shot from well out. Trenton started the second, scoring on a power play and made it 3.2. Port then missed a return goal as Dane and Mark tried a 2-on-1 rush Dean motored in on a breakaway on an assist by Trevor W. to restore a 2 goal bulge. Scott Duncan then made a nice takeout along the boards to end the period. In the first two periods, Port held the edge in play but in the third period our forwards were a little sluggish in helping on defensive zone coverage and Trenton took advantage to bring the score to a 44 tie. D'Arcy was forced to make two great saves in a row with his pads "stacked". Jamie charged up the ice with the puck and steamrolled a Trenton defender for a nice effort. The momentum shift made it look like an all-Trenton finish but Adam Moynes and Trevor W. assisted on Dane's goal from the slot to halt their recovery. Final score was a somewhat sloppy 54 win for Port Perry and extended the team's winning streak. Hey guys - that's enough of those 1 goal nailbiters against Trenton!
