The Money-Puzzle Tree, by new Canadian author Elizabeth Nickson, is a fictional account of the story of one family whose mother was involved in the notorious CIA directed brainwashing scandal which took place in a Montreal hospital in the 1950's. Although this is a work of fiction, the experiences dealt with are all too real for the Canadians who wege treated by Dr. Ewen Cameron for minor complaints of depression, never realizing that they were part of an American experiment in mind control and brainwashing Definitely not for the faint hearted! The God-Sent Child, by Canadian Kim Westad, is the true story of a young Cree girl and the baby she feels she owes . a better life than what she can provide. Convinced to give the baby up for adoption to a grateful middle class family, she changes her mind almost immediately and despite thesodds, battles the judicial system as well as the adoptive parents to win back the child that she loves. This is a very strong emotional book, both from the viewpoints of the birth mother and the adoptive parents, but also from the aspect of the shortcomings of our legal and social services systems in the way that they deal with adoptions. Fans of author Sue Harrison will be happy to know that the final novel in her trilogy, pi Wind, is now in circulation at our library. This book concludes the story of Kiin and Kukutux, which began in Mother Earth Father Sky, a saga from a time before written history began.
