The new Centre and the Secondary School share about 95,000 sq. ft. of facilities and the total cost of the double project was $34.3 million, excluding land, furnishings and fees. ® In her remarks at the opening in the spectacular rotunda-style Board Room at the Centre, chairperson Patricia Bowman said the need to bring all education departments and offices under one roof was identified in 1984. Noting that the Durham Board, with 60,000 students is the 10th largest in the country, Ms. Bowman said the completion of the new Centre means the Board will no longer by paying rent for six different offices in Durham. And, she said, the building came in under final budget and 70 per cent of the construction was by local labour and contractors. "We are very proud of our new home. It is your education centre," she told the audience. Durham director of education Pauline Laing said the Centre will serve a multi-use purpose for Durham residents as a large number of community groups and organizations will hold meetings there. She called the stunning architecture a "mastery of the practical and a vision of the beautiful." Ms. Bowman and Ms. Laing were assisted by Rafi Musafa, a student at Lincoln Alexander Public School in cutting the ribbon to officially open the Centre. Also taking part were three secondary students from Henry St. HS, Uxbridge SS, and Pine Ridge SS. 2 Music from the O'Neill Collegiate Senior Wind Ensemble accompanied the processional at the opening and closing of the official ceremonies. And Jazzmerize, the award winning vocal group from Port Perry High School under the direction of Charles White entertained during the interlude with several numbers. The official ceremonies concluded when students repre- senting every elementary school in the Region walked into the room with pieces of art which will be displayed throughout the new Centre. Childrens Aid move to 555 Rossland The Durham Board of Education and The Children's Aid Society of the Durham Region have reached an agreement in principle, to lease the Board's former administrative site at 555 Rossland Road West, Oshawa. While the primary issues have been agréed upon, a few details are still under discussion. The Board of Education opened its new Education Centre on Taunton Road East, Whitby in August bringing together all its administrative and support staff from a variety of locations throughout the Region. This move coincided: with the Children's Aid Society's decision to relocate its office and consolidate its Ajax and Oshawa operations in more suitable premises than it has currently. The Durham Board of Education has worked within the budgetary constraints of the Children's Aid Society and, as a result, the lease will cover the Board's costs while remaining within the Society's budget. An agreement between the Durham Board of Education and thé Children's Aid Society likely will be completed before the end of the month. The Society would plan to move to the new location early in 1995.
