Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, November 21,1994 --29 <a 7 Still plowing at age 72 From page 28 instrumental in starting up the * Durham West 4-H Plowing Club in 1987. Originating with nine members, the club escalated to a membership of 20 4-Hers this year. Eight years ago Les bought a 1938 W-30 McCormick Deering tractor and he's plowed with it for the last four years in the Antique Plowing Class at the local plowing matches. Although the plowman can be any age the equipment must be at least thirty years old. "This class is always a lot of fun" he laughed. He plowed with the ol' girl this fall at the York Region Match that was held within three miles of where he first broke the ground as a competitor of twelve years. Two years ago he bought another antique tractor, a CASE R that Ruth's parents had purchased new in 1939. Buying it from an 84 year old Stouffville man who had bought it from his wife's parents, it's completely restored now and still has one of the original tires on it! In 1979 Les and Ruth built a house across from the farm and Ted and his wife, Wilma, moved into the farmhouse. The grandchildren are' involved in the local 4-H Plowing Club and plow competitively, something that pleases the grandparents immensely. "We've been fortunate our son and son-in-law are interested in the farm, for if they werent we wouldn't be able to go on a [7 # Free Refreshments # Entertainment Special Seniors' Christmas Shopping Night! Over the last six years Les has judged hog and grain classes at various local fairs too. Les says a former plowman once told him "plowing is the only sport that teaches a young person to go straight!" Often the International Plowing Matches, also known as "tented cities" are sprawled over 100 acres or more of land. Of course, it involves a great deal of walking but Les, at age 72, is still going strong and says "with good health permitting, I'll continue to judge and till that land".
