wp" Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, November 21, 1994 --31 4 Panthers on the short end of this battle of the Ports Monday Nov. 14th was a long night for this particular fan, (and the players no doubt) when the Midget Panthers were pounced upon by the 'ready Redmen'. It didn't take long for Port Hope and not Port Perry to get on the scoreboard. Seconds later Daryl Bourgeois was trying his utmost to tie things up but a big goalie save saw Daryl's efforts fall short. Following suit, the line of lan Shrigley, Matt Hobbs and Jeremy Geer are passing the puck up to hopefully gain some ground, but again an ever alert goalie stops them cold. During this period, the two Port teams each lost a player and with an extra man in the box, the Panthers are once again battling a power play advantage to the Redmen. Naturally it doesn't take this able team long to capitalize on the situation and they net their second of the night. Nearing the end of the first, the relentless visitors further increase their lead to 3-0. Time for a wake up call...(and less penalties)... Well, I guess the coffee in the dressing room just wasn't strong enough for the Panthers, as the opposition tallied up yet another one and we're behind by 4. As the second period progresses, Scott Prechitko is being assailed by an onslaught of rubber but somehow manages to maintain his composure and Port Hope doesn't score anymore (in this perfod...). However, our visiting Bantam Shane Norton, finally puts the Panthers on the board with a clever wrap around surprising the Redman's astute goalie. Nice going Norty...still in the second and with a power play advantage, Jay King drills one right on target, but again a strong save foils his attempt. Next to take the bull by the horns is 'Shrig' who winds up to fire one in - but alas his blade breaks clean away...otherwise. Jeff Clarke, Jeremy Geer and the guys are once again killing some penalties - which they should be getting pretty good at by now. Unfortunately those rousers in red know their way in and find the spot to open up their lead to 5-1. Eventually another power play advantage for our battle weary Panthers arises. Hope springs eternal as Kenton LeFort, who gets crunched in the process, pulls us within three on a gutsy goal, assisted by Jay King. Despite the Panther's late rally, Port Hope remains persistent and it pays off in leaps and bounds as they finish off their big night with two more goals to end the game 7-2. Let's hope the tables will be turned at our next encounter with this well disciplined team from the other Port... Atoms reach A final at Port On Nov. 19 the Atom 'A's played their first tournament of the season in Port Hope. Other teams competing were from Cobourg, Georgetown, Hamilton, Newcastle, Oshawa.LNHL and Pickering. The green machine opened with an easy 4-1 win over Pickering. This game featured a p ly surprising of excellent passing especially with the forwards using their point men well in the offensive zone. The result was a peppering of rubber against the Pickering goalie. Mike Koury guarded our net in this one. Hilites of the first period included a breakaway chance by Justin Moffatt and a foray by Mike LeFort through the defence. Goals were by Dean VanCamp on a backhander, a power play goal by Jeff Tarbotton from Trevor Lance and Mike LeFort and by Trevor Lance on a rebound with assists to Mark Duncan and Dean VanCamp. In the second, Mike LeFort was hustling again and had a near miss on a 2-on-1 with Dean VanCamp. Steven MacLennan made a scintillating rush from his rear guard position. Trevor Weisflock hit the goal post shortly after. Tyler Houthuys showed heads-up neutral zone passes to trigger our forward attacks. In the third, Dean notched an insurance goal on a«2-on-0 breakaway. Assists were by Tyler and Mark. Then Scott Duncan came up big to block a shot on a 2-on-1 Pickering rush. Near the end of the period, Tim Jones stepped up from the blueline to get a good chance from the slot as Dean fed a perfect pass from the corner. Good win for the team..fine passing! Dane Gray was nominated for the "Best Effort" by the coaches. Next game was against the Hamilton Bengals who had beaten the Georgetown Raiders earlier. This game proved to be too easy a win for our team in retrospect as they won handily 10-2. Hamilton scored one goal on a breakaway. Offensive hilites included a breakaway backhanded deke by Dean, a "bullet" wrist shot goal by Mike LeFort and a "tic-tac- toe" passing play for Adam's goal from Mike and Dean. The defence did their bit as well as Jamie Smith popped one in from the high slot. On the defensive side of things, Tim Jones made a sliding takeout to avert a breakaway as the clock wound down. A Hat Trick was notched by Dean VanCamp. Mike LeFort was the Coaches' choice for Best Effort. This win earned a berth in the "A" Championship against PORT PERRY IGA 27:5," ay)" TOURNAMENT Saturday Nov. 26th 7:00 AM - Ops Township vs. Port Perry 8:10 AM - Oshawa vs. Lindsay 9:20 AM - Huntsville vs. Port Hope 10:30 AM - Port Elgin vs. Collingwood 420PM- ~Covsbiation Fine) SCUGOG Cobourg who beat Newcastle in their semifinal. Cobourg ded a "clutch and grab" style to slow down our forwards and skated aggressively to defuse our efforts to organize a sustained attack. This combined with too many penalties on our part allowed Cobourg to capture a 3-2 victory. Grade 10 student at Port Perry High School Kent Johnston won a gold medal recently in the LOSSA Junior Tennis competition. Hope tournament The winning goal came on a second period breakaway as the forward flipped the puck over D'Arcy Stephens in net. D'Arcy had made several key saves to "keep the score close earlier in the contest. Offensive hilites were Malmont goals by Mike LeFort after splitting the defence (assist to Adam) and a quick wrist shot goal by Dean from Mike and Adam. Good penalty killing work was done by Tyler Houthuys, Adam Dean and Jamie in the first period. Tim played a steady game on defence as did Scott. Good luck in your Huntsville Tournament next weekend.
