Kevin Zenglein has been in CIRC. 13,800 Perfect weather for Santa atthe annual parade Usually, when Santa makes his annual appearance in the 'Port Perry Parade, he needs an umbrella or an extra set of long- johns. But not this past Saturday as. clear blue skies and bright sun- light made the parade very comfortable for Old Saint Nick, those on the floats and the thousands that lined the route to enjoy this popular event that just seems to get better and better each year. Over 50 colourful floats of all sizes, and ten marching bands made their way from the Fairgrounds through downtown Port Perry and along Water Street. One new entry this year was the 35 foot high Big V Drug Stores Crusader, a 35 foot high helium filled Christmas gnome with an armful of brightly wrapped gifts. It took 19 people to guide this giant float under the hydro and telephone lines along the route. This year's Scugog Chamber of Commerce parade got an organization boost from about 20 grade 12-atudents in the entrepreneurial studies class « with teacher Dave Robinson. He said he was very pleased with the parade and noted the students contributed hundreds of hours over the last several weeks. With so many outstagding ¢ floats in the parade, the judges had a tough time selecting the "most outstanding" in several categories, But here they are: Religious- Victory Chrigtian Centre; humourous-Ron Lee Septic Services; top band-Kawartha Cavaliers; and best float overall- Epsom , Public School "Flintstones." Tuesday, November 29, 1994 CHRIST ---- TT | . AE A 'Big' Xmas greeting A new entry In this year's Scugog Santa Claus Parade was Big V Drug Stores' 'The Crusader,' all decked out for Christmas. The Crusader Is a 35 ft. tall helium filled balloon, and It took 19 people with attached ropes to guide this guy under the hydro and telephone wires along the parade route. He's a busy fellow at this time of year, as he has made more than 300 appearances at Christmas parades and events in the last five years. The Christmas Crusader Is adapted from the Big V mascot which has been around since the chain was started 32 years ago. "Yes, we are concerned, like all parents would be," Mr. Zenglein told the Citizen Monday morning. "We are trying to keep up a brave front." Mr. Zenglein said the last contact they had'with Kevin was a 1:15 AM (Port Perry time) phone call on Thursday. He told his parents the situation was "reasonably safe" at that time. The phone conversation lasted about ten minutes, said Mr. Zenglein, when the line suddenly went dead. Kevin joined the Canadian forces four years ago and holds the rank of bombadier with the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery stationed in Petawawa, Ont. With a dozen other members of his regiment, he was sent to Bosnia September 28 to install armour plating on NATO military vehicles. The Canadian compound at Visoko has tome under Serbian rocket fire on several occasions, including Sunday when between six and ten rockets were launched towards the base. Mr. Zenglein said that when Kevin called home {ast week he said one rocket landed about 200 metres away, and the night sky was "lit up" with shelling and other military fire. Mr. Zenglein said that when Kevin went to Rosnia at the end of Septembar, he expected to be home for Christmas. With the escalated fighting, he's not sure at this time.
