Seugos Citizen -- Tuesday, November 2 1 1994 --27 = CITIZEN SPORTS= MoJacks fail to make ground on the Eagles The Port Perry MoJacks had a great chance to make up some ground on the first place Bowmanville Eagles as the teams clashed Saturday night at the Scugog Arena. It was a proverbial "four- pointer" as tie MoJacks trailed Eagles in the standings by six points. And when it was over, the handed them a 4-3 loss. This one looked like it might turn into a high scoring affair as the team exchanged goals in the opening minute. The game was just 25 seconds old when Eagle captain got one behind Rick Hutchinson in the MoJack net, but 24 seconds later, Todd Stirling tied the game as he was set up by Gavin MoJacks fourid th lves eight points behind as the Eagles 3 \ Key Bar The Port Perry Key-Bar Office Equipment Juveniles did most of their scoring in the first period, then had to hold off a late charge by the Mariposa Lightning for an 8-6 victory at the Scugog Arena last Thursday night. Key-Bar jumped from the gate in a big hurry in this one and for a while in the first looked like this was going to be a total rout of their opponents from the north. In fact, at one point Key-Bar was cruising along with a 5-0 lead on first period goals by Darrell Vanderligt, Jeremy Norton, Jason Philips, Sean McEnaney and Mike Labanovich. Shane Harley got one back for the Lightning late in the opening stanza, but this was a bit of a gift as the puck banked into the net behind Mike Tripp off the skate of a Port Perry defender. The Lightning started to come alive in the second period as netted a couple of goals from James Riches and Scott Elliott, and Key-Bar also got a pair as Jeff Card was set up by Scott Wylie and Norton, and McEnaney got his second of the* game from Norton and Louis Whitfield. Mike Tripp in the Port goal Coch and Ian Titterton. Midway through the first, Eagles went up 2-1 when sniper Curtis Hodgins found the range as the teams began to settle into that tight checking format. MoJacks Ryan knotted things up at deuces at 1:19 with a low shot to the corner behind Barry Crawford. Brad Bagshaw and Jason Cochrane got the assists. MoJacks did a good job killing off a long double minor situation midway through the period, but hangs on for win faced a lot more rubber in the second period, including a penalty shot which he steered harmlessly by the goal post. Key-Bar looked to be still very much in control with a 7-3 bulge as the teams left the ice for the dressing rooms at the end of the second frame. With just five minutes gone in the third, Port got its only goal of the period, and it was a beauty. Jeff Card was killing a penalty when he knocked down a loose puck just outside his own blue line. 3 With a good burst of speed he stayed ahead of a Lightning defender to move in on goal and score with quick waist high snap shot. With the score 8-3 and just a few minutes to play, the two points seemed to.be safely in the book. . But the Lightning's Sean McLean had other ideas with just over five minutes to play. In a 19°second span he popped a couple of pucks behind Mike Tripp to make the score 8-5 and then with just under four minutes left, Lightning's Rob Jenkins made it even more interesting as he cut the lead to 86. * Rob Stokes for the Lightning t assists on all three goals late inthe game. At back, coaches Kelly Robertson and, Ron Pither, Andrea Grills, Rebecca Hall, Vanessa Petronijevic and Jennifer Sheehey. The Lightning, perhaps sensing some kind of a major comeback in the making continued to push in the final couple of minutes, but the Port team would have none of it as they held on for the 8-6 win. For Port Perry, Jeff Card has a pair of assists to go with his two goals; McEnaney also had two helpers as did Norton and Chad Garvock. While this was a hard hitting affair with plenty of solid body checking, the teams stuck to hockey for the most part. Port was called for 20 minutes in penalties and the Lightning for 23 including a five minute fighting major to Chris Curtain. Ridgway - the Eagles went up 3-2 a short time later when Canning got his second of the game from in front of the MoJacks net. But MiKe Pigeau for the MoJacks sent the teams into the dressing room after 40 minutes deadlocked at three. Working on the power play with just over a minute left in the frame, Pigeau clicked on a wrap-around with Keith Leslie and Gavin Cochrane setting up the play. * What proved to be the game winner came early in third by Eagles Dave Real who had all kinds of time in front 'of Hutchinson to get in three slaps at the puck. Ian Titterton had a great chance to tie things but Crawford managed to get a pad on a clear shot from close range. With almost two minutes left in the game, coach Brad Menzies pulled Hutchinson in favour of an extra attacker. MoJacks were able to put some pressure on the Eagles but could not get the "equalizer. The best opportunity was a hard shot by Todd Dennis caught by Crawford. Despite the low score and tight checking at times, this was a very entertaining hockey game. MoJacks had a slight edge (33- 29) in shots on goal. Each team took eight minor penalties and the Eagles misconducts. SLAPSHOTS: Eagles ran their recard to 16 wins, one loss on Sunday afternoon as they clipped the Lakefield Chiefs 5-3. In other Junior action over the weekend, Uxbridge Bruins came up with a couple of victories as the nipped Lakefield 6-5 and then ganged up on Little Britain to the tune of 7-3. The Eagle win Sunday gives ' them 32 points to date, ten up on the MoJacks in second place. Fan support for Junior C hockey in Port Perry this season continues to be sporadic at best. Satuygday's crowd for the game against the Eagles was respectable, but nowhere near a sell-out. There should have been more people in the stands on a Saturday night for a game between the top two teams in the Central Junior C League. Just why people are staying away is a mystery as the calibre of hockey in this league is excellent. MoJacks have two homes games this week starting Thursday night when Lakefield is in town for an 8:30 faceoff. On Sunday, they will host Little Britain starting at 7:00 PM. ,¥ had two 'There were 24 teams onthe ice at the Port Perry Curling Club over the weekend for the annual Cash and the winner of $1000 for the A championship was a rink from Weston Golf and Club. lan Griffen presents the Lake Scugog Lumber trophy to Bob Stoll, Rob English, Bill Duck and John Pearson.
