mp 28 -- Seugog Citizen Tuesday, November 29, 1994 pd Bantams forced to settle for silver medals First, Sports fans, I'd like to apologize for the lack of a report last week for the Port Perry Country Style Donutmen. I was caught up with my studies and couldn't put my English book down. The team's been pretty busy lately. We've played some great hockey. Trenton tried their luck in our building on Nov. 21. They must have known that they were done before the warm-up was over, because we were pumped. The final score was 10-3 for the good guys. Goal scorers were: Froats (2), Strickert, Norton, Smitty (2) and Troy Campbell with 4 goals! Troy was called up from the farm team for this one. What a game Troy had. This kid knows how to handle to puck. Were his goals pretty to watch, or what! The next night, we took a trip to Cobourg to tangle with our life-long enemies. Folks, I tell ya, I couldn't remember the last time I've been on a team that's beaten Cobourg before this one. Again, we came out flying, playing tough, old-time hockey. This was another great game for us, winning 4-1. Murphy sniped DICK SHINN 985-0587 res. MO BULL a our first and third goals past the Cobourg goalie, while Norty and Smitty filed the others. It was great beating those guys in the barn. Geez, I hate that place. We carried our momentum into the weekend, playing in our own "Port Perry IGA Bantam Tourney". Our first game against Ops was played before the sun rose, making it difficult to get ing. Affiliated player, Dan Lyons, scored two goals. Man, those AP's sure know how to shoot the puck, don't they? Jamie Strickert scored the other, dumping it in on net from just over the blueline. They used to say "If you shoot it on the net, anything can happen". I didn't used to believe it. Just between us, I think it's true.. ~ Lairdy, who isn't known for his offensive skills picked up an assist. Some may say that Laird plays a similar style of game as Marty McSorely. Mike Morden 'and Motor City Smitty also picked up assists. The final score was 3-2 Port. This sent us to the "A" side of the tournament, and up against a big, tough Oshawa team. TRADES ALWAYS WELCOME The outcome of Saturday's final tournament game can pretty well be summed up by the look on Port Perry captain Scott Heffern at right! Huntsville won it 4-1 and Randy Campbell (left) was named game MVP. Huntsville captain Is Sean Bagshaw. See article for detalls of the Port Perry Country Style Bantams fortunes on the 'ice recently. Oshawa winger, Kent Fulling, created a problem for Port as he was a physical force. His legs must have been as thick as oak trees, no joke. After we got around this guy we d ed taken the body a little more, the score would have been different, Iknow it." Assistant coach, Lee Wilbur said "The guys played a good solid tour t. They've been offensively and defensively. Kent Johnston shutout the Oshawa shooters, with 26 saves. At the other end of the ice, 8 goals were scored. Scotty Heffern and Jay Strickert both got the sacred hat trick. Strickert 'scored two goals on one shift, and still wasn't happy with himself. Heffy had to leave the game halfway through the second period to get stitched up. He had a 16-stitch cut, and he didn't even bleed. Man, he's tough. Smitty and Morden both scored to finish Oshawg and send them home empty handed. After winning our first two, we were off to the championship game vs. Huntsville. We were a little bit tired at this point in the day, but still tried our hardest. Unfortunately, we were on the short end of a 4-1 score. Murphy scored for us on a beautiful 2 on 1. Hobbsy went down with the puck and got it onto the doorstep, where Murphy was waiting with a one- timer, top shelf. This was a beauty goal. Savage didn't have too much help in the defensive end. The Huntsville players were allowed to stand where ever they wanted to in front of the net. If we had playing great hockey as of lately, and it's good to see. We've taken .next to.na penalties; and I think that really helps our team concept. Communication is one of the keys to a successful hockey team, and I think that we've achieved it." This week's player profile is on Jay Strickert. Jay is a tough two- way player, who likes to mash the opposition with thunderous hits. Strickert has scored two hat tricks in the past week, and was quoted in the dressing room as saffing "I couldn't have done it without. these wristbands. They're great. If only I could get my own pair." Jay's a pretty busy fellow, juggling school and hockey, but says "You always have to make time for hockey...and school (with a chuckle). It keeps you out of trouble. When you see all those screaming fans on Monday nights at 7:30, you just want to put on a show for them. You want to play forever. Come on out and watch all the ~ guys perform. Make sure you're there for warm-up and the musical interlude. It's a show in itself." See everyone next Monday at 7:30 at the Scugog sports complex. Christmas is on it's way, and we want to get you in the spirit with a treat. Minor Novice at Bracebridge Compton Cable Minor Novice travelled to Haliburton for the Huskie annual tournament on Nov. 26/94. At 11:00 a.m. we met Bracebridge's best 9 year-olds. Compton Cable encountered a strong defensive core and rarely registered a shot. Port Perry skated well led by Ashley Lucas and Tyson Savage. They went on to the semi-finals. That same day at 3 p.m. Compton Cable played Scarborough's ctew of 9-year olds. It was a tight-checking affair with good efforts from Kyle Mullins, Shane Jeffrey, Keenan Geer and Cassidy Weber. Taylor Churchill, Danny Halward and Matthew Roth put in a strong defensive game. Scarborough wore Port Perry down for the win and they went on to win the Consolation Championship. An_ excellent goal-tending exhibition was put forth by Leo Taillon and an ailing Mark Carnaghan. Compton Cable's Most Hard-working Player goes out to Tyson Savage. PORT PERRY TIRE & WHEEL Automotive ® Farm Commercial ® All Brands 985-8177
