Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, November 29, 1994 --31 4 The Port Perry High School Midget girls basketball team struck gold last week at the LOSSA finals with a victory over Brock High School. Congratulations to all members of the team. Front from left Mary Justynskl, Laura Domlk, Beck Evans, Jennifer Elliott, Hilary Nolan, Linsey Ingraham, Lisa Timms. Back row, coach Jan Bate, Meghan Desjardins, Tanya Wiison, Adrienne James-Mitchell, Amanda Wakeford, Laura Hooker, Julle Puckrin, Karen Francis and Dana Lavereau. Midget Isles in A finals On Saturday, November 19, the players of the Midget Canadian Tire Islanders awoke early to the sound of their blazing alarm clocks. They were to be in Picton, a two hour drive, for a 10:00 am start as they took part in the Prince Edward County tournament. The Islanders looked tired in their opening game against a squad from Brampton. The two teams were well matched, but Port came out on the short end of a 4-2 decision. Port struck first as Matt Brown scored, following his own shot, after getting the puck from Eric Lucyk. That's when Port decided it would be a good time to take a team snooze. It cost them dearly as Brampton scored four goals and put the game out of hand. Port made a weak comeback effort as Trevor Smith blasted one home from the point assisted by Jason Logan and Matt Phillips, making the score somewhat respectable. After a 'chowdown', Port put on a better show for their cheering section with a 10-3 demolishing of the host team. Jon Jamieson, who missed the first game due to a prior engagement, led the way for the Islanders scoring a hat trick. Tim Fitzpatrick followed suit with a-pair of goals with singles going to Matt Phillips, Mark Brownson, Matt Brown, Port Ee (Ie Perry | uma 1625 Scugog St., AUTO SALES LTD.| PORT PERRY 985-1916 (across from beer store) USED CARS - TRUCKS ' 1989 FORD F150 4X4 - 4 cylinder, air Randy's Picks V8, air, tilt, cruise, cassette, 78,000 km. .... 1993 CHEV LUMINA APV Cargo Van, V6, auto, 1991 JEEP YJ 4X4 - Only 39,000 km. 6 cylinder, 5 speed, stripe pkg., mags .. 1991 PONT. As you can see, aside from the goalies, everybody was in on this "act. Speaking of goalies,Jamie Trick came up with a few key saves when he was tested to keep Port rolling. Since this was only a four team tournament Port made it to the 'A' finals with a tourney total of 8 1/2 points. There they met Brampton once again and lost by the same score as they did in their previous meeting. Not only was the score the same, but the entire flow of the game seemed to resemble the first match. Once again Port had the red light glaring first as Matt Brown's hard work paid off. Adam Hunter and Jon Jamieson set Matt up. Then Brampton, as if on cue, scored three goals to put Port in a big hole. After Jamieson scored from Brown té bring Port back into the game, Brampton added the insurance they needed and took home their well deserved first place trophy. Brian Bickmore was superb between the pipes as he turned back Brampton a number of times. Although Port lost more games than they won, they were still 1990 PLY. The following Wednesday Port rolled into Beaverton where they battled with the Blades. The Islanders seemed to be running on empty in this game as they fell behind early 4-0 It wasn't until the 4:18 mark of the second period that Tim Fitzpatrick banged home a power-play goal asgisted by Todd Parry and Jonathan McCourt. Matt Brown scored two minutes later from Jon Jamieson and Eric Lucyk to bring Port back into the game. The Islanders then snuck one goal closer when Matt Phillips was set up by Devin Blair and Mark Brownson. However it was not to be for Port on this night. Beaverton added a goal late in the third period to go ahead by a pair. Kevin Gray got Port to within one again as he unloaded his canon from the point and sent the puck soaring over the goalie's shoulder. Trevor Smith picked up the lone assist on the goal This was all the scoring Port could muster though, and they lost a heart-breaker, 5-4. Come out to the rink this Wednesday night to watch Port collide with Beaverton again. Charlie Dennis scored twice with Ken St.Amant netting one of the other markers for the winning team. Replying for Raven's was Dan VanLoon with both goals. The B&R Swampers and Blackstock Brewers hooked up in one of their usual hard fought battles with it ending in a draw even after a single overtime period. B&R got on the board first with Mike Butt scoring from Jason Price. 3 The Brewers then tied it up on Gord Bryans shot with Ron Wagg gaining the assist. There was no further damage done in the second period and the teams went to overtime with Blackstock on the powerplay Cobourg 5-2 which they turned into a goal by Scott MacLennan from Tom Wotten. Brian Robinson replied for B&R to end the scoring. The last game of the day was also close with The Framer's Gallery pushing the league leading Brooklin Bruins to overtime as well. Luc Collard from Roger Ramelli got the ball rolling for Brooklin late in the opening period. It wasn't until the midway point of the second that Framer's tied it up with Paul Brough scoring from Tyler Renaud. With 56 seconds left in the overtime frame, Collard and Ramelli reversed roles to put Brooklin in the win column. Five of the league's teams attended the Cannington over the weekend with B&R coming home the victors. To get there they went through Blackstock and Brooklin. Trader's and the Framer's were also in attendance. doubles Malmont Atoms On Nov. 25 Cobourg came in to town and for the second time in less than a week, showed solid team play and opportunistic scoring to steal a 4-2 victory over the Malmont Atoms. In the first period cagecop D'Arcy Stephens made a save on a Cobourg forward left all alone in the slot. Shortly afterwards Cobourg used a rare penalty shot opportunity to grab a 1-0 lead. They then scored on a goal mouth scramble to go up 2-0 and the Malmonts looked very disorganized to close out the first period. The second period was a different matter as the Port team tied the game with some rejuvenated forechecking and passing. Scott Duncan broke the ice on a wrist shot that squeaked through the goalie's armour with assists by Trevor Lance and big Justin Moffatt. Also in the second Adam Moynes gave his Fan Club (see that sign!!) a reason to cheer as he converted on an assist from Mike LeFort (see that sign again boys) ~*~ In the third, Cobourg had a good chance but D'Arcy Stephens stonewalled them on a point- blank shot. He couldn't hold the fort forever though, as Cobourg got the winner when a man was left uncovered in the crease to tip in a centering pass. (One wonders if he was in the crease illegally on that goal..?) Nothing good happened thereafter for the deflated "Green Machine" and Cobourg put the icing on the cake with 42 secs. left in the game thanks to some very scrambly defensive zone coverage. Better luck next time folks. Coach Hutchinson's nomination for Best Effort was blueliner Scott Duncan. You are cordially invited to attend an evening presentation ...
