Already a top Welsh judge, also . a well-known breeder and - importer of Welsh ponies, is encouraging her to pursue this interest. As for Shirley Cane, of Hoskin Stables, shels been earning awards yearly since taking up the hobby of showing Welsh ponies eight years ago and like . Jenn, earned some pretty impressive awards over the 1994 show season. The popular Blackstock horsewoman was Reserve Champion in the "A" Gelding Stallion Driving Division and won the trophy in the Saddle "A" Pony Division with her aged gelding Audmore Audubon. And for the fourth consecutive year Shirley won the Most Versatile Welsh Pony in Ontario award. * It's often Shirley's daughter,; Patti Hoskin-Swain, Jenn or Cadri Mand, a young girl from Tyrone, who show in these 'versatile' harness classes. Friars Empress, a five year old mare claimed Reserve Champion "A" Mare on Line and Champion line, saddle and Welsh "A" Mare Driving and received the High Points Performance trophy in All Divisions. . But, probably, her proudest moment came when she claimed the "Champion Stallion" and "Champion 'A' Stallion Gelding in Harness in Ontario" trophies with her three year old stallion, Kenview Maui Mauchini. Like generations before her, Shirley has been involved with horses all her life and plans to continue showing the Welsh ponies. "We're expecting two foals next Spring and both are from Champion mares" she said. "I love raising the foals, breaking and eventually showing them." She says she couldn't pursue her hobby though without the support of her husband Terry, and son, Phil. Like Jenn, showing ponies is a family affair for the Cane's. Shirley's husband, Terry, trapsports the ponies to the shows, then is content to watch from the sidelines, while carving on a piece of wood, a favourite hobby. And while Shirley is away on the show circuit, her son, Phil, manages the farm. Dr. Kevin Dunkerley ®Dr. Lionel McTague % Dr. Robert LEY.
