qa Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, December 13, 1994 -- 35 +a Country Style falls to the powerful Nats Hello once again sports fans. The Port Perry Country Style Bantams haven't been playing up to their capabilities as of late, but I think things are going to change. On Monday, Dec. 5th, the Peterborough Nationals came to town looking to maintain their figure four leg-lock on first place in the league. The Nats have a'8trong team and outplayed us, with the results showing up on the scoreboard. If we had turned our game up a notch, and changed a few things, I think we could have knocked them off of the high pedestal they seem to think' they're on. The final score was 8- 6 in Peterborough's favour. Rob Murphy took a shot from the point which was tipped by Derek Tindall, and blocked by Nat's goalie, Kris Ehmke. Morden knocked the rebound behind Ehmke, to get us started. Our second goal was scored by Scott Heffern, with Murphy picking up his second assist on the night. Hobbsy also assisted. This brought the score to 2 all. The Jcoring seemed to be going back 'and forth. Heffern then scored again, on a fabulous passing play. Tindall led a 3 on 2 rush deep into Peterborough's end, then dished off to Norton. Norty somehow managed to get the puck to Heffy, who was waiting in the slot with a cannon that blasted into the top corner. Casey Van Schagen scored our next late in the second period assisted by Norty and Heffy. The Nationals also scored a late period goal to bring the score to 74 after two. In the third, we showed some heroic signs of a comeback, but it didn't seem to be our day. Strickert scored on a slapshot that couldn't be seen it was going so fast, and Morden ged in a rebound to finish off our scoring. An empty net goal was added by the opposition, and we were done, Lenny faced a lot of rubber in goal, but enemy players weren't knocked down in front of the net making his job nearly impossible. We took it easy as a tedm during the week, only having one late-night ice time that was in preparation for the Minden Mudhog Challenge. We first faced off against Haliburton, and this was a show for all to see. Shane Norton scored our first and only goal, flipping one in assisted by Adam Hobbs. This was it for our scoring, and Haliburton only managed to get Lots of hockey and ups and downs for the Islanders After a week off to concentrate on school work this sports writer gets back on track with the Port Perry Canadian Tire Midget Islanders. They have played a lot of hockey recently, some of it good and some of it well...let's say...not up to par. Way back on Sunday, Nov, 27th the Islanders travelled to Ops Township for a 7:45 start. Port chose to be a follower rather than a leader and played only to the pace of their opposition and came out, with a 3-3 tie. Kevin "Boomer" Gray got Port on the board first as he would up . from his familiar spot on the blue line and put a 38 x 1 inch puck into a 4 x 2 inch space in the top corner of the net. He was assisted by Trevor Smith and Matt Phillips. After Ops squared things early in the second period, Mark Brownson took a cross-ice pass from Jason Logan and blasted the rubber at the net. Matt Phillips cleaned up the rebound and put Port in the lead. After Ops tied things again, Jason Logan banged home a loose puck from Tim Fitzpatrick and Kent Taylor. Port though they had the winning goal, but a gutay Ops squad as you may have sed podted the final tally and things were left undecided. The next night the Islanders were in Little Britain to take on Mariposa. Port put together a solid effort and survived a mara winning 5-4. Scoring for Port in this game were Mark Brownson, Eric Lucyk, Jon Jamieson, Matt Phillips and Devin Blair. These guys had the touch on this night and provided enough offense for the defence tp work with. The game was slightly delayed GOTCHA' HONEY] HAPPY 19th BIRTHDAYI1 at 12:16 of the second period as one "Mariposian" was slightly disturbed with a call from the men in stripes. He decided it might be best to take it out on the penalty box door to provide ample rest for both teams. Phillips, Matt Brown, and Kent Taylor played set up men and they each collected an assist. The Islanders were more than pleased with their performances. Two nights later on the last day of November, the Islanders hosted Beaverton and came up with a very, very poor effort losing to the tune of 3-1. The only offense for the good guys in this game came from Eric Lucyk, assisted by Matt Brown and Jon Jamieson. Boy, that line has been clicking well lately. The turning point in the game came at 3:45 of the third period. With the score tied at one, a Beaverton player scored an odd goal when he would up from the hash marks and clanged the puck off some part of the net's frame. The referee claimed the puck had entered the back of the net and came directly out, much to the disbelief of Brian Bickmore who was having an excellent night in net and the rest of the Islander team. Anyhow the goal stood and it proved to be the winner. On De¢. 4th, the Islanders travelled north to Bancroft to take part in the town's annual tournament. Port's first competition came from and the Islanders were able to eek out a close 5-4 victory. Things did not look pretty after the first frame as Markham had built a 2-0 lead and eventually a 3-1 lead heading into the last period. Port showed a lot of guts however, and scraped back to earn a win. Jon Jamieson scored Port's first goal assisted by Matt Brown and Kent Taylor and it was Devin Blair who started Port's comeback with a solid effort from Jamieson and Matt Phillips. Goals were then notched by Matt Brown, from Eric Lucyk, Adam Hunter on a solo effort and Jamieson again with a winner from Jason Logan, Jamie Trick provided solid goaltending to preserve the victory. Port's next game was against hated Milbrook, and this time Port wasn't so lucky. "The Brook" tallied five markers in all to Port's one, Port seemed to get out bumped and out hustled and it cost them a spot in the 'A' final. Kevin Gray got the lone Port goal with a sweet and lovely move rushing in from the point. I think the goalie's glasses might have been a little foggy after that one. Brian Bickmore did all he could to keep Port in the game but he didn't get much support, Port moved to the.consolation side of the tourney and played in the 'B' final against the host Bancroft squad. Over time was needed to decide this high flying offensive battle with Port being a little out manned and losing 6-5. =» With only eleven skaters Ports did well to keep things tight. The score stood at 4-1 in favour of Bancroft after two periods of play, but onee again Port showed a lot of guts and stormed back. The scoring summary for this game went as follows: Kevin Gray from Matt Phillips, Devin Blair from Todd Parry and Kent Taylor, Adam Hunter from Jason Logan and Taylor, Jon Jamieson unassisted, and Blair once again from Hunter and Taylor. 7:00 PM moJack an. © MoJACKS vs. GEORGINA ICE At the Scugog Arena - SUNDAY, DECEMBER 18th, 1994 Many Prizes Adults $3.; Students & Seniors $1.; Children - Free one by some superb goaltending by Shane Savage. We went down to sudden death overtime, with a player being removed from the ice every minute, after the first five minutes. Haliburton were the lucky ones on this night skaters aside. * Every practise you can find Hobbs working on a new maneuver for his 'deadly break away, as that's how he is. He's a hard worker, who mucks in the corners. Hobbsy says "you know, I like m at practise, | might take a scoring first with just two J give it my all out on the ice. If This put us on the 'B' side the tournament. "The mental part of the game is_just as or more important than actually skating around out on the ice, and I just don't think we were prepared to play." "We might as well have been doing triple sow-kows out there. We were skating around in circles." That is what Blades had to say about our next game, (among other things). He was right. We weren't ready to play, and we didn't. The final score was 4-2 for the other team, on an empty net goal. We went home early, in disbelief to what had just happened. It was a learning experience, and T don't think we'll ever forget it. This week's player profile is on #10, Adam Hobbs. Hobbsy's a great smooth skater who doesn't like to take any guff on the ice.
