LJ a Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, December 20, 1994 -- 7 _& Creating the Christmas spirit year. after year by Heather McCrae For almost forty-five years now, the Santa at Brock's has been waving to passersby, young and old alike, instilling the Christmas spirit year after year. Marina Brock, a fifth generation family member, and also the manager of Brock's and Brock's For Kids, told the Citizen it was her grandparents, Arthur and Marguerite Brock, who bought the Santa in 1950 from Prager's, a manufacturer and supplier of store equipment and display products, during one of their routine shopping expeditions. Arthur fancied the mechanical wave of Santa and Marguerite thought the kids would love him. But, back in the fifties, $200. was a huge sum to pay for a window decoration, Debating long and hard that afternoon, A party , for kids after all by Celine Scugog Christian School Sara came barging into the kitchen. "Jenni fur" "Jena fur"! "Tomorrow's Christmas" Sara stopped short, "What's wrong?" asked Sara. Jennifur replied, "We can't have a Christmas party," . "Why not?" asked Sara. "We're , too poor." Jennifur said sadly. . Sara went to the living room where her mom and did were. "Why can't we have a Christmas party?" Sara asked. "We're too poor." Dad said, "But we still can worship". Sara lit up. "What are we having?" "Turkey" mom replied. "Can I help mom?" Sara was jumping up and down. "Alright", said mom. Just then Jennifur came in. "I heard all you were saying "Can I help also?" "OK", said mom. "Let's go" replied Sara. They peeled the skin and cooked the turkey. The next day Dad said, "I guess we can give up one of our ever green trees", "Yes" replied mom. So Dad went out to get a tree and put it up. Sara and Jennifur made paper ornaments for the Christmas tree. They had a wonderful feast. "Even if we are poor we still can celebrate." said mom. the couple took a methodical walk around the block and, stirred by the Christnias spirit, came back to Prager's to make That Santa In the window at Brock's store Is well-over 40 and still going strong. Most retailers don't look after them, he said. "Often the decorations can't be stored away fast enough and are jammed away until the pext Christmas season". "Someone has been good and kind to that Santa" he laughed. Yes, Someone has been good to Kris Kringle and he comes in the form of Jerry Colleran. Marina told the Citizen "it's Mr. Colleran who has ensured Santa is fit and groomed, year after year, to assume his duties at Christmas." The historic Santa you see standing beside Marina in the picture was manufactured in the late forties by a firm located in the warm state of Texas. Mr. Jackson was more than pleased to hgar a Santa that had been bought at their store almost 45 account and it's nice to see sométhing of the past.is still ~ with the present." ~ Marina says every year when Santa officially comes to town with the annual parade, he's placed in the front window, ying and smiling daily to all e kids until 6 p.m. Christmas Eve. Then it's time to be taken out of the window so he can meet the elves, prepare his reindeer and begin delivering presents to the children all over the world. Maybe you've already noticed, but Santa was placed in a different spot this year and is located in the new Brock's: For Kids store window. "We just thought it would be more appropriate to have Santa in this new store" Marina explained. Although this is the first year Santa has been in a different location, the tradition still years ago was still operational! remains.....Merry Christmas "We value the Brock's everyone!
