Spencer Churchill of the Port Perry Pineridge Atoms was named game MVP after his team def = eo Citizen -- Wednesday, Taniars 4, 1995 --17 ~~ Pineridge Atoms finish the year on a great note Pineridge Atoms finished off 1994 with a bang in the Trader Sam's Atom Tournament presented by the Port Perry Minor Hockey Corporation on Friday December 30, 1994 at the Scugog Arena. Port Perry Minor Hockey Corporation and the Port Perry C : aly wel y teams from Haliburton, Millbrook, Sutton, Brampton, Alliston, Richmond Hill and Cannington. We would like to thank Richard LeFort, Tournament Convener, Randy Wiseman and Doug Harper for their efforts which brought about a smoothly run day. Pineridge Atoms faced Cannington, a tough rival, in the first game. Despite brilliant defensive moves by Mike Wiseman, Dylan Harper, Derek Bond, Gerrard Timmers, Garrett Brown and Mike Thompson, some excellent passing plays by B T.J. Robins, Mike Alliston C Realty in overtime to win the consolation trophies at a tournament here last week. At left is Alliston MVP Eric White. iy and Glen Thompson, Pineridge. succumbed to Canni 4-0. Islanders take consolation at Midget tourney On Wed. Dec. 27th, the Port Perry Canadian Tire Midget Islanders welcomed teams from around the Province to take part in their annual tournament. Port welcomed Carl Phoenix back to the line-up who was sorely missed while he was out with a broken collar bone. Carl will once again provide some much needed offense. Port being the home team, played the early game at 7 a.m. against Woodville. Perhaps feeling a little tired and full of Christmas turkey (although I'm sure Woodville felt the same way, but I'm grasping for excuses here), the boys played as if still asleep and lost 8-1. Port's lone goal was scored by Mark Brownson assisted by Rob Gracie in the third to avoid posting a donut. on the scoreboard. Port played their next game at 11:30 and looked a lot better, pounding Markham 4-1. Perhaps they were . embarrassed by their earlier performance and wanted to put on a better show for the home crowd. Matt Phillips scored a couple of beautiful goals, the first assisted by Devin Blair and Kent Taylor and the second assisted by Blair and Jason Logan then sent a torpedo- like shot that somehow weaved its way through traffic to find the top corner. Kevin Gray who had assisted on Logan's goal rounded out the scoring as he gave the old how's she goin' to a couple of Markham players before sliding a backhand home. Eric Lucyk picked up the lone assist on the final tally. Jamie Trick was stellar in net as he turned back a couple of Markham scoring chances that could have made a difference. Port then played at 4:00 in the Consolation final against a squad from Port Elgin. This game was no contest as Port gained a little respect winning 5-2. Adam Hunter got things rolling with a blast from the point assisted by Carl Phoenix. Port then took a two goal lead thanks to Mark Brownson and Matt Phillips with assists going to Phoenix, Darren Kinnunen and Matt Brown. Jon Jamieson added insurance with a goal from Matt Phillips and Phoenix closed the door on any hopes of a Port Elgin comeback with a goal late in the third assisted by Mark Brownson. Jamie Trick was once again solid between the pipes in the winning cause. Matt Phillips picked up MVP honours for this solid two-way effort. Port's next action is this Wed. Jan. 4th against Manvers. Come out and watch as Port hopes to start the new year off with a bang. The boys must have used the break between games visualizing themselves winning for they came out full force against * Sutton. Fans were treated to good hockey action in front of both nets. Gerrard Timmers took a boomer from the blue line that had everyone off their seats. Mike Thompson made some Sno-Pitch teams About the first week in February, most of us will be looking for some kind of relief from the winter blahs. If you can't go south, why not get a team together for a Mixed Sno-Pitch Tournament to be held February 4 and 5 at the Water Street baseball diamonds in Port Perry. This is the second annual such tournament, a memorial to Andy terrific passes and Dylan Harper had a powerful shot on net. Good concentration by Shane Fischer in net kept Port in the game. Suddenly, second period, Wes Langmaid passed to Spencer Churchill who muscled his way through two defenders to pass to Dave Halward who put Port on the scoreboard 1-0. Quicker than lightening, Glen Thompson came in again with a wrap around that gave Joe Schembri the chance he'd been waiting for. He popped it in the net for Port's second goal. Tenacious forechecking by Joe Schembri created this opportunity for Port. The third period found Zak Fis coming up with some heart stopping saves, Mike Milligan scoring on an open net and Wes Langmaid assisted by Mike Wiseman popping one into the net to finish off the game 4-0. Consolation Final Alliston opened up the scoring early in the first period. Port answered back by Joe Schembri's pass to David Halward who made a beautiful top corner goal. Then Dylan Harper shot a boomer from the blue line, Spence Churchill picked it up and chucked it into the net. Alliston came back and tied it 2-2. Gerrard Timmers makes a beauty pass to Mike Milligan who passes to Wes Langmaid, who came in and pounded it into Avis, a Blackstock teen-ager and avid baseball player who lost his life in a car accident a couple of years ago. Registration forms for this t are now available at Pineridge Sports (Port Perry Plaza) or by calling Bernice Avis at 986-0653 or Doug Lowe at 986-0231. The cost is $200 per team and registrations must be in by tour the net for the go-ahead goal 3-2. Port was plagued by penalties in the second period but Dylan Harper, Gerrard Timmers, Mike Milligan and Geoff Simpson killed those penalties famously! Some awesome saves by Shane Fischer kept everyone happy. The game was tied 3-3 at the end of the second and started out early in the third with Alliston ahead 4-3. A great pass by Joe Schembri to Dave Halward and a big shot flew by the goalie. Trevor Robins and Geoff Simpson had the fans on the edge of their seats with their great chances on net late in the third. The score was tied 4-4 at the end of the third. We move into overtime. Once again, end to end action but the Port Perry fans didn't have to wait long when Glen Thompson, unassisted, pounds the puck into the net for Pineridge Atoms win of the Consolation Final! Thanks to all teams who participated. Thanks to Coaches, Paul Milligan and Steve Churchill, Trainer Randy Wiseman and Manager Doug T. Thanks to Paul and Lori Milligan for opening their home and backyard ice rink for a celebration of the day's tournament and the '94 hockey. All players and parents wish everyone a Happy New Year! We're all looking forward to '95 and more great hockey action with the Pineridge Atoms. wanted February 1 to allow tournament organizers to draw up a schedule and contact teams for their playing times. Bernice said "we know there are lots of avid ball players out there with an itch to get out the gloves and bats, hit the diamond and roll around in the snow." So get your team together for February 4 and 5 and don't forget the sun screen.
