The Malmonts won in the penalty department incurring just one penalty and also won in the goal scoring department to capture a 5-1 win. In the first period Dean VanCamp broke the ice after an assist by Jeff Tarbotton. Jeff got his second of an "assist hat-trick" near the end of the period as he set up Trevor Lance's goal. In the second, Jeff assisted with Trevor L on Dean's second goal. Cshawa took advantage of a power play to get theironly score in the period. Adam Moynes played a strong game for the Malmonts and was rewarded with two third period goals-one from Dean and one, into an empty net. Mike Koury had a fine "Best Effort" performance as cagecop while Mark Duncan and Steve MacLennan were pushing guys off the puck authoritatively. Tyler Houthuys and Dane Gray played solidly in the defensive trenches. Game two on Dec. 27th was against our neighbours from Mariposa who gamely stole some period, points by holding us off the scoresheet in the third period. Our Green Machine prevailed for a 5-0 shutout win with D'Arcy Stephens getting the "goose egg" in net. In the first period we got a break as Jamie Smith took a shot from the top of the circle after*Trevor Lance won the draw to him. It deflected off a defender's stick and proved to be the winning goal! Later on Dean scored on a breakaway backhand deke (haven't we seen that move before?) after a feed from Mike LeFort. Our hustling created another chance when Tim Jones started a nice 3 man passing play in the corner to Dean and over to Trevor Lin front. We were up 3-0 after Jamie ripped his second of the game inside the far post after Tim had brought the puck out of his own zone and banked the puck off the boards onto Jamie's stick. Momentum was with the Port lads in the second frame as well. Jeff made a nice pass to send Trevor Lance in on a breakaway. Dean got his second goal on a 2 on 0 breakaway backhand deke after Steve MacLennan lifted the puck out to him. Mark Duncan howed some nifty f k on the offensive attack as he suddenly jammed on the airbrakes, eluded the defenseman and directed a wrist shot on goal. Dane Gray got a slapper on net and Tyler Houthuys jammed a puck back into the offensive zone with some good blueline play. Our final goal of the game was the result of a crisp pass from Mike out to Dean in the slot. Dean deposited it along the ice into the far corner before the goalie could blink. "Best Effort" awards for the Malmonts against Mariposa went to defenseman Tim Jones. Game 3 was a 7-1 victory over the Oshawa Canadians. Mike Koury was between the pipes. In the first period, speedy Trevor Lance scored from Jeff and Dane. Then Jamie made a good pass on Trevor Weisflock's score. Dean captured a second period "hat trick" with helpers from Adam, Scott, Jamie and Dane. Two of the 3 were shorthanded! Adam (from Dean) and Tyler Houthuys (from Mike LeFort) on a point screen shot closed out our scoring. Dean was our "Best Effort" player. Our fourth game was against the "Chicago Express" team who went into the "A" Final as they hustled on every shift and got opportune goaltending to give our reps a 3-2 setback. In the game goalie D'Arcy Stephens played strongly for us as well. Lady Luck wouldn't cooperate at times for us in our many chances to take over the score. In the first period alone Dean had 3 potential scoring plays as he personally killed off most of our penalty. In the second period, Dean connected on a rebound off Adam's shot and in the third Adam did the same on a rebound off Dean's blueline shot. At this point, we were done 3-2 as Chicago had used aggressive surges to our net to crowd our crease and_ frequently outnumbered our defense. Dean missed on a breakaway play in the third after a good poke check by the goalie. Justin Moffatt was 'given the nod for "Best Malmont Effort". On we went to the "B" Championship and we won this convincingly over the Oshawa RedWings to finish 3rd overall in the 10 team tournament. In the first period Jamie hustled on an unassisted goal and Steve MacLennan set up "Dean's goal. Near the end of the period D'Arcy Stephens made 3 saves in a row to stop a comeback. In the second Trevor Lanse made a fine pass to Jeff who scored on a 2 on 1 play. Trevor Weisflock assisted also. Tim then made some good plays at the offensive blueline as did Dane. Mark Duncan was digging tenaciously looking for pucks to feed to his centreman. While we were shorthanded D'Arcy again came up with a huge stop to frustrate the Wings. The Green Machine went on to score 4 third period goals to earn their trophies. They were by Jeff, Mike LeFort (power play from _ Adam and Dean), Jamie (from Mark and Trevor W) and Mike on a Power play beauty passing play from Adam and Dean. D'Arcy was "Best Effort" star of the game Winning 4 out of 5 games in the tournament will hopefully re-inforce the benefits of low penalty and hustling team play that will be needed for their upcoming playoff season.
