a J mp" Scugog Citizen -- Wednesday, January 4, 1995 --19 4 Phantoms take over at top of the SHL pack After many weeks of waiting patiently in second place, the Pineridge Phantoms have chosen 1996 to vault into sole ownership of first place honours in the SHL! The New Year opening Monday also saw a number of surprises as teams put on their "playoff faces" for the "January Jockey" to final berths! Game 1 had the Compton Comets break out to a first period 38 goal lead, but that was it as the 95 edition of the Taylor Aces came back with an unbelievable 7 unanswered markers to take the contest 7-3! Granted, the Comets were missing Tom Barnes who unfortunately broke his leg in last Monday's Boxing Day Game, but let's face it sports fans, those Aces were full marks for this victory! Ken Little had the big game with a goal and 5 assists! Todd Wilbur and Mark Pehlemann both notched a pair, with singles to Wayne Norton and Al Bonner. Rick Campbell had 3 helpers, with singles credited to Wilbur, Pehlemann, and sponsor Wayne Taylor in this important Ace romp! Mike McQuade had a pair for the Comets with Willy Edwards scoring the single. Edwards also had a pair of assists with Doug Bache and Jeff Johnstone having one apiece.» Game 2 saw the "magic on ice" continue as the Van World Sharks knocked of the Monsma Chargers! The game was a see-saw battle Doors get a nice Christmas gift The PeeWee Overhead Doors gave themselves a Christmas present on Dec. 23 in Port Perry when they all fattened up their scoring stats by pummeling the Oshawa Blackhawks 10-3. The scoring action got started right after the opening horn when Scott Cunningham jammed the puck in on the short side with assists by Kam Cooper and Wade Ritchie. Oshawa retaliated with a goal of their own shortly after but thatweis all they would get for awhile. Wade Ritchie, who has been playing great hockey, scored Port's second goal with help from Matt MacM: and Scott Chris Jones did a I favour for his buddy Ryan in net, when the puck flipped behind ryan on the goal crease and Chris jumped in to clear the puck to the corner. The Doormen took a 2-1 lead into the second and it was here the scoring flood gates opened. John Bacon scored the Door's third goal unassisted when his shot rolled up and over the goalie's shoulder. Shortly after, John Bacon scored his second goal on a nice play by Joel VanCamp who held on to the puck behind the Oshawa net and passed it out at the perfect time. Joel Phoenix was also credited with an assist. 'The Doormen went up 5-1 when pointman Murhpy Irvine unleashed a shot from the blueliné and Scott Cunningham was there to tip in the rebound for his second goal on the njght. Wade Ritchie also got a helper. Kam Cooper scored Port Perry's sixth goal on a Power Play when again Murphy fired from the point and Kam deflected the shot. Wade Ritchie had an assist. Scott Cunningham scored his third (a hat trick) on a back hand shot to give Port their seventh goal. Assists to Kam and Wade. At the end of the second Port took an 8-1 lead when Kam scored his second goal of the night with assists to Joel P. and Scott C. Oshawa fought back to score two goals in the third frame but the Doormen added two more of their own to the score to 10-3. Port's ninth goal was scored by Bacon (his third - a hat trick!) from Joel VanCamp and Joel Phoenix. The tenth goal was scored on a Power Play when rearguard Chris Jones assisted on Kam Cooper's third goal of the game - another hat trick. Blueliners David Justynski, John Burnett and Reid McTaggart were using the body well to keep the Oshawa attackers off stride. Russ Brown showed good hustle when forechecking and backchecking. Ryan Fraser got the win between the pipes and John Bacon was the Coaches' choice for Best Effort. Earlier in the afternoon the Doormen had travelled to Uxbridge to play an Exhibition game. The last time these two teams met the Doormen had a terrible game but this time they skated with Usxbridge and took a 3-1 Jead into the third period. But Uxbridge didn't want to be embarrassed on their own pond and.came back to score 3 goals in the third. Port scored one more to end the game in 84-4 tie. The goal scorers for Port were Joel Phoenix from Matt MacMaster and Wade Ritchie from Scott Brownson and Kam Cooper. Port's third goal was by Scott Cunningham who finished off a beauty play in which Grant Hooker fired from the blueline after a perfect cross ice pass from Chris on the other point. On the fourth goal, practice drills paid off when Chris Jones shot a low hard shot from the point that Scott B n, with his through the first two frames, but then the Sharks went into a thi period "frenzy" to add yet another 2 points to their season total! Phil Cochrane with 2 and singles by Gary Lance, Steve Connors, and Jay Adam sealed the Shark victory. Connors with 2 assists and singles by Wayne Fox. Adam, Lance, Randy Prosser and Terry Bache rounded out the Van World attack. For the. Chargers, Dave Thompson and Bill Bridge had the replies. Brad Hurst had a pair of assists with singles to Bridge and Tony Oxley. If the first 2 games didn't surprise the fans, then the third game did the trick as the Fitzgerald Clippers played without taking a penalty for a full game and bounced the high-flying Crandell"s Gamblers to the tune of 6-4! The Clippers had Jeff Brownell in net for this victory and a strong effort from all 10 players present, to take a full team of Gambler hopefuls! Derek Fitzgerald led the way with a goal apd 3 assists. Steve Lee, Glen Hudson, and Carl Fitzgerald all had 1 and 1. Doug Bronson and Bill "Roc" Owen both Clippers off on the right foot in 1995! . Carl Durham had a strong game for the Gamblers with a pair of goals and 2 assists. Rob Evans and Mark Decosta both had goals and a pair of assists with George Gladish and Glen McCoy adding single helpers to complete the Gambler attack. Game 4 had the crowd buzzing as the two first place teams from 1994, squared off for sole possession of first place in the SHL to start 1995! Both teams were equal to the task as the game went end-to-end and Shawn Parker in the Phantom cage and Ken Harman at the other end of the rink put on a goaltending clinic! When the final buzzer sounded after a truly exciting tame it was the Pineridge Phantoms 2, the Harrison Blazers 1! The Blazers scored first on a goal by John Harman from Larry Jackson and Darcy Milligan. But it was the Phantoms on goals by Clarence Stephenson and Colin stick on the ice, deflected between the goalie's pads. Chris Thompeon and Ryan Fraser shared the goaltending duties and both were forced to come up big numerous times. Coaches' choice for Best Effort was Wade Ritchie.
