20 -- Se _-- 1995 MoJacks bounce first place Eagles 6-1 The Port Perry MoJacks said farewell to 1994 on a positive note last week with a pair of solid victories including a 6-1 drubbifig of league leading Bowmanville Eagles. If the team continues with this kind of effort in 1995, MoJacks will stay right in the thick of the race for second place in the Central Junior C standings. After a couple of pre-Christmas losses to the Eagles 4-8 and Lakefield Chiefs 7-3, MoJ must have found something their liking in the Yule tide turkey as they bounced back December 27 to double the Uxbridge Bruins 6-3 and then handed the Eagles their worst defeat so far this season December 29 in front of a large crowd at the Scugog Arena. And there was nothing flukey about this one. MoJacks simply out-worked the Eagles for much » of the game, stayed with them bump for bump, got some timely saves from goalkeeper: Rick Hutchinson and made the best of their scoring chances. Leading scorer Keith Leslie has obviously re-discovered his deft touch around the cage as he clicked for the hat trick in this one. Singles came from the sticks of Todd Stirling, Steve Staniland and lan Titterton. Eagle captain Todd Cannings fired the lone marker for his team. Hutchinson set the tone for this one early in the first period with the Eagles buzzing all around his cage. He made a magical stop with his right toe on a shot that had net written all over it. A few moments later Stirling finished off a nifty give and go with Mike Pigeau and Chad Kearns to stake MoJacks to a 1- Thank goodness for Myriam Bedard! Canada's athlete of the year for 1994 won the award with dignity, accepted with a grateful smile and didn't threaten to take anyone to arbitration. In fact, Myriam seemed like the only gthlete in the country who enjoyed her sport in the last year. So can we teach her to play left field or right wing? The professional sports world went kooky. Bettman and Goodenow were in the summaries more than Bellows and Damphousse. Fehr and Ravitch stepped to the podium more often that Joe Carter stepped to the plate...struck out more often, too. Pro sports not only lost its Innocence but its sanity as baliplayers, with million-dollar salaries, went on strike and NHL owners stopped signing players to mega deals jyst long enough to complain about the cost and lock the players out. Somewhere, somehow, something went terribly wrong. If Abner Doubleday had envisioned Cecil Fielder in a silk shirt arguing the plight of the free-market first baseman, he might have invented croquet instead. There was a day not long ago when a kid could get his favorite player's autograph for free at the local Super Valu. Now he might as well get the checkout clerk to sign, because the players are busy buying the store. So what's to become of this mess? It's too much to ask for a return to simpler times. Or is it? While the big league boys beat each other up with Gucci briefcases, minor league ballparks are filling up. Across North America, are fi g to small stadi where they can see a game and sample all the snacks for the price of a parking spot near Skydome. Once almost extinct, hockey at the local level is flourishing again, too. Junior and senior leagues are springing up or bouncing back and fans are finding fun in watching games at the local rink, even If the part of Mark Messier Is played by the kid from the hardware store and the coffee is reminiscent of an oll change. Maybe this weird sports year has taught us that major league baseball and the NHL aren't essential services and the world continues to turn without them, although the sportscasts get rather dull, Alas, though, the idols will be back sometime in '95 and it probably. won't take long for most of us to forget, if not forgive. We could teach them all a lesson in the New Year but we crave the best so that won't happen. We'l 3 watch and listen to their games and pick them in our pools agal But If it's inconceivable that we'll i away to make ther¥ pay, the least we could demand is that all of these players resolve, in Oech were enjoying a two man advantage late in the period when Leslie fired his first of three from the side of the net with help from Steve Laird and Gavin Cochrane. Eagles cut the lead in half midway through the first when ~ Cannings got his stick on a loose puck near the crease, but the MoJacks'™8hen proceeded to break things open with three goals in less than seven minutes for a commanding 5-1 lead after 40 minutes. v Leslie with - his second, Staniland with a great low shot and lan Titterton did the damage. Titterton used his speed to blow around an Eagle defender and then buried a waist high shot behind Jeff Reid. Leslie got his third midway through the final frame to make it 6-1 as the MoJacks simply checked the Eagles into the ice. Two nights earlier (Dec. 27) MoJacks scored four times in the third period en route to a 6-3 victory over the Uxbridge Bruins. Todd Dennis did most of the damage for the MoJacks with a five point night (3 goals and 2 assists. Singles went to Jason Cochrane, Titterton and Pigeau. Keith Leslie had 3 assists. For the visitors, goals came from Whitlock, Charbonneau and Vandergraft. This was a rough and tumble game with ref Dave Wedlake handing out more than 100 minutes in penalties. SLAPSHOTS: The annual Central Ontario Junior C League All Star game is this Saturday (Jan. 7) at 2:00 PM in Bobcaygeon. The All Stars will tuke on the Bowmanville Eagles. The MoJacks reps on the 1894- 95 squad will be rookie defenseman Scott Heasman, veteran defenseman Gavin Cochrane, netminder Rick Hutchinson and scoring leader Keith Leslie. After a break for the New Year, MoJacks are back in action tonight (Jan 4) in Little Britain (game time 8:00 PM). On Friday they are in Bobcaygeon and on Sunday night at the Scugog Arena will host Bobcaygeon at 7:00 PM. The Bullets are battling the Merchants for the last playoff berth. MoJack general manager Murray Parliament was steaming mad last Thursday night when former MoJack Shannon Todd showed up in an Eagle uniform. 1 The talented. and temper- mental Todd is attending school in London and playing Junior D in nea: mont. Parliafent said he has a 'gentleman' s agreement" with th Todd in uniform, "it's going to cost them." Todd took part in the pre-game warm-up last Thursday night, but after the furor erupted he Keith Leslie gets a pat on the back from linemate Todd Dennis after scoring hat trick to lead the MoJacks to a 6-1 win over Bowmanville Eagles, it may be just what the team needs to break out of a slump. See story. did not dress for the game. Todd, a natural goal scorer, played minor hockey in Port Perry and the last two seasons with the MoJacks. Bantams settle for the B crown Hello, sports fans, and welcome to another laid-back report for the Port Perry Country Style Bantams. Before Christmas, way back on December 19, we played host to the Oshawa Generals. Murphy, Heffern, and Norty all had huge nights, scoring 4 points each. Heffy scored three and assisted on one. That was it until after the big holiday, when we were entered in the 28th annual 1994 Hespeler Minor Hockey Olympics. This tourney was huge. You could tell that by the two dollar price tag on the program. Is this the show or what? We first faced a small quick team from North London in'our first game. The game sheet was misplaced somewhere between Hespeler and good old Port Perry. The good news is that we won 7-3. The bad news is that I can't remember the goal scorers. When game time came aground we were ready and willing to kick some butt. Rob Murphy got things things started isted by Mike H and Wilbur was on the bench all weekend long, and said after this one: "What are you guys doing out there? Wake up, man. Get going. We should have won that game 25-0. Maybe we could have given them one goal, but we should have been pounding their goalie. He's not so great. Get ready for our next game against Hespeler. They're a Pee Wee team, but they're good. Be ready." A bad call was made, after Adam Hobbs slashed an opponent in the leg. He was given the gate, and no one was pleased. Especially Mr. Hobbs who had just driven up to Hespeler, and walked into the arena, when this was going on. Maybe we should've asked the kind referee if he would like 6 vicious cross checks to the back of the head. Lee's talk really set us straight. We all went back to the hotel, or whatever and powered up for our next encounter. We won 7-0. This was a good game through the first period, but then we broke away and the new year, to back off the business suits and | di commence being childish again. "Jim Hughson is sponsored by ger that if Todd wants to play elsewhere, the MoJacks would have to agree to release him, "I am very disappointed to hear of this (his desire to play for the Eagles) through the back door," Parliament said after the game. "He showed no respect for our organization or the people who work 0 hard for us." While Parliament said he's "not necessarily" looking for compensation for Todd's release, another equally angry team official said if the Eagles want § WAR deny Colin Laird. Nat King Cole sung us & tune next and then tucked 'er home getting some help from Nickolia Skerrochovski. Smitty and Norton then teamed up, with Norton Siang She ey 10 suale the wars 3to 's lone marker. the finest of his career, going defensive line and then drifting one above the tender's shoulder, but below the crossbar. Sniped. We won this one, 4-1. This al pg in exciting thriller to watch. Waterloo was up next, In another game in which full efforts by some weren't put through. Coach Lee (Assent Awiell Yu pajalene ga win pul valuta either tht or B championship for sure. We had to defeat West London early the next in the A championship. We ended up losing 3 1 because we weren't knocking people down, passing on the tape or hustling. This wasn't a good game fans. Sorry hockey Sorry. Strickert scored our only goal assisted by Smitty and Morden. Shane Savage made some great saves to even keep the game wasn't the same as it would have been, winning the A side.
