On December 22 in the Kent Farndale Gallery, amidst Library Board members, KFAB committee members, her father and proud grandparents, Katie was awarded the Bursary by Mrs. Farndale. As Mrs. Farndale presented the Certificate and cheque to Katie, she said "The community is proud of you and your accomplishments. The Winnipeg Ballet School has a wonderful world-wide reputation" adding, "this (bursary) will be nice on your CV (curriculum vitae) and will stay with you forever". Thirteen year old Katie smiled shyly, "this will help me a lot" she said. Chairman of the Library Board, Jim Wills, said "It's important we've established this bursary to recognize young people in the community. It's nice to be able to recognize and encourafe talent such as yours, Katie". Seven applicants for the art bursary were received. Although the majority, with the exception of Katie, were post secondary students, the KFAB committee members stated the Bursary is available to any Scugog Township resident, regardless of age, and will encompass all arts, not just visual (art). Katie started taking ballet and modern dance lessons Whén she was three years old. When she was nine she became a part of the well-known Inta Kids Dance Troupe, and competed throughout parts of the US and Canada. Then she began to take serious ballet lessons with Fritha King of Oshawa. Winning scholarships across the country, she learned she had been accepted into the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School last August. The School, recognized as one of the world's foremost training schools for young dancers, has been Katie's home since last September.
