- 2 wp 4 Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, J: Y 24, 1995 CITIZEN SPORTS Port Legionaires up for the task at hand Port Perry Legionaires began their trek to the top at 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning, when t! took on the Oshawa Red Wings, who have improved steadily this season. It took awhile for the boys to get their legs in gear. Oshawa hit the scoreboard first at the 6:51 point of the first period. It wasn't till 9:04 of the second, that Greg Bruton tied the score, assisted by Matt Caldwell. At 6:07, Chris Skerratt pocketed a beautifu] shot, set up nicely by Brad Johnston and Nick Pelyk. Bart Monsma played a busy game in net and made the "Catch of the Day" on one fish that could have easily gotten away! In the third period, Greg Bruton made an awesome deke on the Oshawa goalie and scored, unassisted. At 3:17, Oshawa.came back with one of their own to make it 3-2 for the Legionaires. At 1:76, with Port's power play in progress, Greg completed the hat trick, assisted by Jeff Ashton. With 4 seconds left, Deryk Campbell scored the "empty netter", assisted by Chad Lance. Final Score: Port 5 - Oshawa 2. Tournament "A" Final: The Agincourt Crew were pumped up for this final game, by whom, we're pot sure. It was obvious from the start they did not want to make the trip back home without a win over the hometown team. They opened the scoring at 9:35 and had several more good scoring chances, but Port never quit! Chris Monsma was awesome in net. At 3:19, Agincourt picked up a penalty which Port's power play managed to capitalize on. Brad Johnston picked up the honours, from Greg Bruton and Chris Monsma. The second period saw Chad Lance score on a rebound from a Jeff Ashton shot, putting Port up by one. With Port shorthanded, the second period ended on a tying goal by Agincourt. Neither team was about to lay down. At 8:45 of the third period, Chad Lance scored a shorthanded goal assisted by Deryk Campbell and Braden Tarbotton. This proved to be the winner as the Legionaires went on to win the game 3-2. Everyone concerned is proud of this team and their coaching staff. It's a 100% effort every time they hit the ice. Congratulations Legionaires. Game 2 of the tournament Saturday found the Legionaires against Lindsay. Legionaires found themselves in the penalty box just one minute into this game giving Lindsay the man advantage to start off the game but Port hustled hard to kill off the penalty keeping Lindsay off the board. These two teams having played together in a recent tournament were playing some real end to end hockey. Despite three penalties to Lindsay in the first period, the score remained 0-0 at the end of the first. The play did not slow down in the second, however Nick Pelyk made a nice pass to Matt Caldwell who fired a shot at the Lindsay goalie where Brad Johnston was ready and waiting for the rebound and Bingo! Port was or: the scoreboard at 6:53 of the second. Lindsay turned up the heat trying to even up the score but despite a few scrambles in front of the net, Mike MacLennan stood firm between the posts. With the face off in front of our goal, Lindsay whistled one into the net to even up the score. Ryan McQuade, Braden Tarbotton and Brad Johnston were making some nice passes, challenging the Lindsay net minder but he was not letting anything past him despite their attempts. It wasn't easy, but they did it. The Port Leglonaires won their home Pee Wee tournament - Saturday knocking off a rugged Agincourt team 3-2. See story above.
