eae AE EYE REC mw 2 _ Scugog Citizen -- Tu y 24, 1995 A, 7, } Injured player vows to For players, parents, coaches and fans, it is just about the worst nightmare in the sport of hockey. To see a player go into the boards head first, unable to get his arms up to brace the fall and then to see him sprawled awkwardly on the ice, unable to move. " That's exactly what happened the night of Friday, January 13 to Sean McEnaney a member of the Port Perry Key Bar Office Equipment Juvenile team in the Silver Stick tournament in Mooretown, Ontario. - Carrying the puck in the centre ice zone at the end of a shift, Sean took what he calls a "hit from the side," after dishing off a pass to a team-mate. - ! It was not a vicious hit, he recalls, but the kind that happens dozens of times in any full contact game. But he knew at the moment of impact that he was in the "danger zone," close to the boards and unable to get his arms up to Brace the" head-first collision with the boards. The result was four fractures to +bonesiin his neck and as Sean lay on the ice, he kept thinking to himself "I just want to be able to move my legs." Fortunately (if-one can ever use that word when talking about a Homestead Furniture | serious neck injury) Sean was. able to get his legs moving slightly before he was taken from the ice to hospital in nearby Sarnia. . He was air-lifted that night to Sunnybrook in Toronto and the next day doctors bolted a "halo" to his head. Just over 24 hours after his crash into the boards, he was up and around, much to the relief of his parents Bernie and Jill, team, mates, coaches and friends. Now recovering at home where hell wear that halo for the next three months, Sean told the Citizen he's bound and determined to play hockey again. get back on the ice The ultimate decision of course will be up to the doctors who have, already told him no hockey for a year at least. But Sean is aiming to be back on skates when the new season starts next fall. Hockey has been his life since he gould barely walk and over the years he has played in hundreds of full contact games. Last zeason, he was a member of che Key-Bar Juveniles that captured the all-Ontario championship. He's had some knee cartilege and back problems.
