mp Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, January 24, 1995 -- 3 A. New Chamber president sets priorities One of the first priorities for Brenda Casteels as newly elected president of the Scugog Chamber of Commerce will be to * get more participation from the members in major Chamber events. Ms. Casteels said letters will be sent in the next week or two to all current, past and potential members outlining the numerous events coming up this year. "Hopefully, we'll get some people willing to take on a job," she told the Citizen in an interview last at the Queen Street office the Chamber shares with the Business Improvement Area (BIA) The Chamber gets involved in several large community events each year, starting with the Snowflake Festival in mid- February and continuing with the Canada Day celebrations, Festival Days in mid-July, Aquarama, and the hugely successful Santa Claus Parade at the end of November. And Ms. Casteels, who has worked on all of these events, knows as well as anyone "that you can never have enough volunteers to get the work done. With several new directors named to the Chamber at its annual meeting earlier this month, Ms. Casteels said the executive will be looking for new ideas and expertise. And, she said people who want to volunteer will be assigned to committees where they want to serve. "You always get more production from volunteers if they like what they are doing," she said. Ms. Casteels has worked as a real estate agent for 11 years, the last ten with Scugog Re/Max. She first joined the Chamber of Commerce three years ago as a director. She immediately became actively involved in Chamber events and found the work Alex Shepherd to attend gun meeting The public is invited to attend a meeting on January 30 concerning the federal government's proposed changes to Canada's firearm laws. The meeting is being sponsored by Port Perry Rod and Gun Club and Durham MP Alex Shepherd will be there to talk about the changes proposed by the Liberal government and to answer questions. It will be a good opportunity for non-firearm owners and users to learn the facts in this contentious issue. The January 30 meeting will be held in Oddfellow's Hall.in Port Perry (Simcoe Street South) and it gets underway at 6:30 PM. thoroughly enjoyable. "The kind of business I am in is so dependent on the local economy, I got involved with the Chamber to be able to help out, to give something back to the ,community," she stated. And she has found her work a "terrific way to meet people, to get involved with the community." She said when she first became a director, it was not her goal to end up president of the organization in three years. Ms. Casteels was first vice president last year and was elected president last week when the new directors held their first meeting. Aside from getting more active involvement from members this year, Ms. Casteels said some of her other goals as president will be to work with the Economic Development Committee to help boost Scugog's profile and to attract new industry and business to the municipality. To this end a detailed directory of Scugog is now being prepared that will serve as a marketing tool to attract business. "I think Scugog has to be careful how it grows, but I'd like to see it more self sufficient in terms of jobs," she said, adding she feels the Township can attract commerce and employment chances without sacrificing quality of life. The Chamber of Commerce has about 120 members and will accept new members at any time. And it will accept active participation from volunteers at any time as well. As Ms. Casteels said, large community projects don't just happen on their own. The more people doing the work, the easier it is for everyone. First vice president this term is Rick. McCoshen of Rick's Hairstylists, 2nd vice president is Paul Michel of Raglan Welding and secretary treasurer is Kelly Campbell of Blackstock, an accountant with her own financial services business. e Men's » ae Women's WINTER BOOTS .. by w Tender Tootsie w Kodiak w Wolverine w Arctic Trail w Cougar = Sorel wo Men's & Women's SHOES ..by w Tender Tootsie w Calico = Westie w Deer Stags w= Wolverine & more AND « Coats / Hats / Mitts Sale starts Wednesday, January 25th, 1995 BR@CK'S Service, Quality and Style since 1881 168 QUEEN ST, PORT PERRY 985-2521 'BROCK'S WOOL & FABRIC Clearance Continues! 0 40% Off PATONS WOOL - ©® Buy One Metre, Get the 2nd ...
