=. Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, January 24, 1995 -- 7 ~ 'l love you so much it hurts' The National Storytelling Theatre presents Helen Porter, one of Canada's foremost storytellers, in "I Love You So Much It Hurts" at the Town Hall 1873 on February 3rd. In 1987 Helen Porter made a storytelling tour of Northern Ontario and during that time stayed in many towns where she listened to stories of the communities. Helen portrays Roxy Osbourne, resident of Kirkland Lake, seller of women's undergarments and mother confessor to the women of the community. Roxy's business is fraying like the loose elastic of her foundation garments and she takes solace in the music of bar country singer, Rosemary Hue (performed by Rondi Helmer) and her "Lonely Hearts" hurtin' band. The artists weave larger-than life stories with music creating a funny, sometimes sentimental theatre piece. Roxy and Rosemary become entangled and together find new life in one of Ontario's "typical towns". "I Love You So Much It Hurts ig full of funky atmosphere, promising quirky characters, entertaining stories, and great tunes" said the Globe and Mail. "Porter's homey storytelling, with its quiet anecdotes and regional rhythms can be comfortable and satisfying" said Now Magazine. Helen Porter is the founder and artistic director of the National Storytelling Theatre. Since 1990 she has written, performed and produced My Father Taught Me To Swim, My Grandmother's Mouth, and the April Fools Festival. Please note that this is the only Friday night concert in the Town Hall 1873 series. Showtime is 8:00 pm. Tickets are available at Irwin Smith Music for $20. This condition is characterized by the paralysis of one half of the face due to inflammation of the facial nerve where it passes through the skull near the ear. The actual cause has never been established. Our prime minister is a famous victim of Bell's Palsy which afflicted him as a child. The facial paralysis usually comes on suddenly, and may worsen over the following day or so. Pain about the ear also occurs but usually lasts for only a few days. Muscles controlled by affected facial nerve do not respond, causing the face to feel stiff and pulled to one side. Difficulty with eating and spitting is experienced. The facial nerve is alsp.-responsible for the ion of taste, therefore, a disturbing change in taste of food usually occurs. Normal blinking is reduced as eye closure on the paralyzed side becomes an effort. This eye may need to be patched if eye closure overnight is not possible; dryness of the eye's surface will also be a problem. Vision and eye movements are not directly affected. Approximately 60% of Bell's Palsy cases recover completely without treatment; only about 10% of all patients are dissatisfied with the final outcome because of permanent disfigurement However, a poor prognosis for recovery is associated with complete paralysis of half the face, advancing age, and severe initial pain at the onset of the condition. Treatment of the inflammation interfering with the facial nerve may help in these cases. Recovery may take months. Le Dr. Workman recommends thorough eye examinations to assess the health of the external and internal eye. Those diagnosed with Bell's Palsy should receive thorough eye care to check for dry eye and receive appropriate therapy. Patients should also be aware that the blink reflex (an unconscious protective response to close the eye) may be absent; thus, eye protection is important, Because eye exams are more than just a prescription for glasses ...
