Bud Atkins, president, said the Co-operative is planning to convert 5.25 million bushels of corn annually to 52 million litres of ethanol. Blended with gasoline, ethanol is used as an oxygenate to improve burning capability. It can cut exhaust emissions of carbon dioxide by up to ten 'percent and of carbon monoxide by up to 30 per cent. As well as ethanol, the Cornwall plant will produce distillers dried grains-a high protein livestock feed supplement, and carbon dioxide used by industrial gas distributors in beverages and food packaging. "For farmers, this is a new value-added grain processing market opportunity," said Mr. Atkins. "The ethanol plant will mean that farmers, the grassroots driving force of the project, can di fy their busi obtain a more stable market for their corn and become less dependent on the fluctuating whims of government farm support programs," he said. The meeting this Wednesday in Blackstock is part of an intensive ign in many across east-central Ontario to sell stock. Voting membership or non- voting preferred shares in two categories are available at a par value of $100 per share. Plant construction is expected to get underway later this year and ities be finished in about 18 months. When operating at full capacity, it will be going 24 hours each day, seven days a week with a work force of more than 30. Expected sales when running a full capacity are $34 million annually. Canadian drivers now use about 30 million litres each year, most of it produced from western Canada grain.
