It is a time to celebrate the birthdays of Lady Baden-Powell, the late World Chief Commissioner and her husband Lord Baden- Powell, the founder of Scouting. Since 1926,their birthday has been celebrated around the world In 1907 Lord Baden-Powell, having a background in the Army, organized a group of boys and took on Brownsea Island set, England. He and taught them to all #ver the United Kingdom. At end of this spectacular event was a group of girls, eager to join in the festivities, bravely and defiantly calling themselves "Girl Scouts". Citizen welcomes PPHS co-op student The Scugog Citizen is pleased to announce that Melissa Crawford has joined our staff as a co-op education student Melissa, 17, is a grade 12 student at Port Perry High School who has always enjoyed writing. For that reason she is considering journalism as a career. During this school term, Melissa will be working each weekday mornipg-at the Citizen office, learning" about the editorial end of a community newspaper. We will be giving her both writing and photography for tion in the Citizen. And she will be covering events at Port Perry CASHWAY BUILDING CENTRES High 8chool. Melissa says she hopes this work placement "will give me the best possible experience to learn about the newspaper industry. I plan to go on to college and hope to work at a magazine or a newspaper." The Citizen is pleased to be involved again in the co-op education program with Port Perry High School. We feel it is n excellent program to give students hands-on experience in a work setting. We welcome Melissa and are confident she will find her work experience with us interesting and beneficial to her future career aspirations. nced that Scouting could be for girls as well and together with his sister Agnes organized a similar program for girls. By 1010, although women did not have the vote, Guiding had caught the imagination of women and girls all over the world. Guiding encouraged women of all clase and races to explore new horizons in small groups or companies of ds. In 1912 B.P. married Olave Soames soon to become known as Lady B.P. She was just as enthusiastic about Guiding as Agnes and B.P. and was appointed Chief Commissioner for the United Kingdom in 1918, later to be World Chief. The Port Perry Knights with authentic Hungarian Guiding first came to Port Perry in 1949, being the first and only Company north of Oshawa Division to which they we originally attached. Brownies stafted soon after, the younger girls not wanting to be left out of the fun. Guiding has continued to flourish over the years from s mere handful to over 200 girls involved this year. It has provided the girls and their leaders with a fundamental program that has encouraged and implored its members to reach new horizons. Roberta Bondar reached for the stars. "Thus do we Guides," said Lady Baden-Powell, "of all kinds and of all ages and of all nations, go with the highest and the best towards the spreading of true peace and goodwill on Earth." To all former leaders and Guides in Port Perry. We would like to pull together any and all information on Guiding in Port Perry to keep as part of our records. Although we have some information on leaders, badge earners, Gold Cord Guides etc., in the early years to 1961 and from 1977 to the present, we have a substantial number of years with no records. We would appreciate hearing from anyone who might have information which they could share to update our records.
