wr" 34-- Scugog Citizen Tuesday, February 21, 1995 MoJacks win playoff nail-biter 6-5 The Port Perry MoJacks took a two games to one lead in their best of seven semi final series with Sutton Ice Sunday night at the Scugog Arena when Trevor Bremnor scored with under two minutes to play. With this high scoring game tied 5-5 and headed for overtime, Bremnor and linemate Darryl Bricknell went to work deep in the Sutton zone. Bricknell did some fine work to get possession behind the net and fed a pass to Bremnor who slid the puck along the ice from a fairly sharp angle. The shot beat John Zeiger cleanly. Bremnor had worked hard all game at both ends of the ice and it was fitting that he was rewarded with the game winner. This was a wide-open hockey game with both teams throwing caution (and defense) to the wind. Todd Dennis staked the MoJacks to a 1-0 lead as he blasted a 30-footer that beat Zeiger on the glove side. Sutton: got that one back early in the second on the power play and then sharpshooter Jason Robinson went to work for the Ice with two goals in four minutes, both on the power play for a 3-1 lead. Then it was MoJacks turn to use the power play as Jason Cochrane snapped home a rebound off the back-board and three minutes later, Cochrane fed Dennis a fine pass and he converted from the slot to end the second period tied at threes. MoJacks opened the final frame with a flurry as Keith Leslie was set up by Dennis for a 4-3 lead and Bricknell made it 5- 3 at the 13:00 minute mark. But the Ice were not finished and stormed back with two to tie things at 5-5 late in the period. That set the stage for the dramatic game winner by Bremnor. MoJacks out-shot the Ice 39-28 in this one. Friday night in Sutton, Ice got a pair of goals from Robinson i 3 SPORT STATS gt ' (Central League scoring champ this season) and took a 5-2 decision over the MoJacks in game two. Paul Kelly and Todd Stirling managed the goals for the MoJacks. GAME ONE: MoJacks got the series off on the right foot last Wednesday night when they doubled the Ice 4-2 in front of a good crowd at the Scugog Arena. Keith Leslie, who led the team in scoring during the regular schedule picked up where he left off with a pair of markers in this one. Forwards Paul Kelly and Steve Laird rounded out the scoring for Port Perry. For Sutton, Steve Knispel and Todd Hamblin were able to get the puck past Rick Hutchinson who kicked out 26 shots in the MoJack net. MoJacks didn't appear to have suffered any ill effects from the nearly two week lay-off while they waited for the opening rounds of the playoffs to conclude. Both teams stuck to hockey for the first two period with just a single minor penalty. However, tempers flared in the final frame as MoJack defenseman Steve Staniland q d off with Doug Claughton Team Standings - Head Pins 22 Teddy Bears 19 Satan's Bowlers 15 Port Perry Dart League Week Ending February 18 NAME: Played W . This was a major league scrap between two big guys as Hamblin seemed to get the upper hand at the outset. Cochrane battled back and got in some licks of his own before the refs finally got them apart and headed for the showers. Hamblin got the extra minor for instigating, but the MoJacks were less than amused when ref Brent Thompson nailed Cochrane with a gross misconduct for yanking Hamblin's helmet off. Hamblin had done the same thing to Cochrane, but was not called for the gross penalty. Defenseman. Todd Byers came up with the best hit of the night late in the third when he put his shoulder into a Sutton forward at the MoJack line blue and flattened him. It was an old- fashioned body check of the kind not seen too often these days in hockey at any level. SLAPSHOTS: Next gamé in this series in Port Perry is this Thursday night (Feb. 23) with re faceoff at 8:30 PM. Game six is in Keswick Friday at 8:30, and if a seventh game is needed, it will be this coming Sunday at 7:00 PM at the Scugog Arena. In the other semi final series now underway in the Central League Bowmanville Eagles have a 3-0 hammerlock on the Uxbridge Bruins. Eagles dumped Bruins 8-4 on Friday night and pounded them 8-1 on Sunday night with ex- Oshawa General Jason McQuat getting the hat trick. Eagles could end it with a win tonight (Feb. 14) in Uxbridge with faceoff at 8:45. If the Bruins . win, game five is in Bowmanville on Wednesday evening at 7:30 PM Head coach Brad Menzies was generally pleased with the way his team played in the 6-5 victory except for a ten minute stretch where "we seemed to fall asleep." He said the key to winning in Sutton is to keep the score close to prevent the Ice from using the small arena to shut down the MoJacks. "We have to force them to open things up and we have to do some more hitting," he said. Menzies said he expected the series would be a close one. Shepstone girls gold medal game (Editor's Note) Those proverbial "gremlins" got into our computers during production last week and made a major mess of a sports article about the Sh this season. Team manager Diane Cooke said there was plenty of support from the Port Perry families and friends whe h d on the Novice team to Petite ringette team's gold medal performance at a tournament in Kingston. The score in the gold medal game against Nepean was 5-3 thanks in part to some excellent defense late in the match when Nepean pulled the goalie with a two-skater advantage. This was a great tournament for the Petite as Shepstone was an under-dog going in. But the win shows just how much progress this team has made a gold medal also. And many stayed to watch the Petite final and cheer the Port Perry team to victory. "Way to go girls. We have a lot to be proud of," said Diane. The Citizen is sorry for the mix-up in the copy in last week's edition and we extend sincere congratulations to all members of the team, the coaches, managers and the parents who are so > supportive every step of the way. Techstar up one after tough start On February 16th, the Techstar Bantams travelled to Trenton for the first game of their second playoff round. The Techstars got off to a horrible start and found themselves down 3-0 to a weaker Trenton team. Late in the first, Gavin Baxter got the Techstars on the board and a shot from the faceoff dot.
