Port Perry curlers take Golden Slider, 1995 Roy Corden arrived in Blackstock on February 13 and conducted a St. Valentine's Day Massacre a day early. His top guns were himself, Don Beaton, Brian Hamilton and Randy Scott from the Port Perry Curling Club. Dale Van Camp, who headed up the "Dream Team" for the Blackstock Club was assisted by Cam Porter, Keith Van Camp, and Ron Vice. The Blackstock curlers were taken completely by surprise as the Corden group of sliders hit the first match, Port led three, taking all of the first games. They were scored on the basis of five points for a win, one point per end and half a point per point scored. The Blackstock men sashayed onto the ice for game two, not sure what had happened. But they had been behind before and were still able to sweep to victory without too much _ trouble. After all, the 'Port Perry gang couldn't read the ice very well at the Cartwright Club. On ice two, Ron Vice was able to eke out a tie with Corden, and on ice three Cam Porter took three of four ends. But on ice one, Don Beaton ended up with three of four ends for a win. At the end of two games, it was Port Perry still leading by a score of 53-21. The Blackstock crew appeared to be shell-shocked, but never gave up hppe for a comeback. However, Corden never gave them a chance. He was like a muskie irr pursuit of a minnow. In game three, Blackstock could manage just two of the 12 ends and were out-pointed 36 to four, for a total of 89-25 for Corden's gunners. There was draw to the button competitiop before the final game and the Blackstock men hoped this might destroy the concentration 'of the Port Perry crew. But even here, the visitors from across the "causeway" prevailed and the contest was won by Duncan Campbell. Game four saw a more determined Blackstock dozen on the ice and they had a respectable showing with a tie on ice three, a win on ice two and a loss. The final tally, after the last rock had been thrown was Port Perry 108 and Blackstock 42. A shocked and tattered-looking for '96. x As for Port Perry, let it be known the determination paid off and the curlers can take pride in knowing they put the opposition in its place, at least until next year. (Editor's Note) This Golden Slider Challenge brought together a great group of guys from both Port Perry and Blackstock Clubs who really had Fred Ford awarded the prestigious Golden Slider Trophy to a heroic Roy Corden. This trophy will be hauled across the causeway and placed in a position of honour in the trophy case at the Port Perry Club. This is the first time in three years of Golden Slider Challenge competition that the trophy has gone to the Port Perry curlers. And with it, go the bragging rights for a year, at least. The "dream team" concept didn't seem to work for Blackstock, and likely you'll see a return to best team selection in the Golden Slider Challenge Not this year for Atom A's On Feb. 18th, the Malmont Farm Atoms hosted their annual tournament. Teams from Newmarket, Bradford, East Gwillembury, Oak Ridges, Uxbridge and Oshawa came along to strut their stuff. The Malmonts won this tournament in dramatic fashion last year but the outcome for this year's team was destined to be different. In the opener, the Malmonts lost to the Oshawa Red Wings 4-3 in overtime. Port had built up a 3-0 lead by midway through the second period, but at that point, the Wings"seemed to want to win badly and they fought back gamely to tie the score. With just 16 seconds gond in the overtime, they took advantage of a face-off in the Malmont zone to score the winner. Goals for Port were by Trevor Lance (on a backhander), by a hustling Dean VanCamp on a breakaway while his team was successfully killing off a 2-man penalty and by.Jamie Smith on a second chance shet from the slot. D'Arcy Stephens made a good poke check save in the first period and then 3 consecutive saves on an Oshawa power play in the second. Oshawa markers in regulation time came on another power play, a giveaway and a breakaway earlier in the third period. Goalie Mike Koury made * a couple of nice saves when the Malmonts were shorthanded yet again late in the third period. The Malmont team ended their tournament action by another overtime loss 4-3 to East Gwillembury. An energetic East Gwillenbury team' capitalized on a "wraparound" goal in overtime to relegate the "Green Machine" to observer status. Pineridge Atoms knock out Trenton: in deciding game Saturday night in Port Perry, Trenton was here for Game 7. The first period started off with a 'quick goal for the Pineridge Sports Atoms by centre Mike Milligan on a breakaway, assisted by T.J. Robins & Joey Shembri. ot Within a couple of minutes, Mike scored his second of the night assisted by Spencer Churchill. Halfway through the second period, Trenton caught Shane Fischer off guard with a bouncing puck to score. Late in the second, David Halward, Wes Langmaid, Matg- Skerratt and Geoff Simpson kept Trenton's goalié busy as he made numerous oul saves. %/._ After a flood and rest the third period started off quick. Glen Thompson on a breakaway was tripped at the + second of the night core wed 4-1 for last second. With, Trenton a man short, Gerard, Timmers rushed the net scoring for Pineridge. With solid defense by Dylan Harper, Derek Bond, Mike Thompson, Garrett Brown and Mike Wiseman they shut down Trenton's desperate struggle to get back in the game. Halfway through the third period, "G" Timmers scored hi ynissisted. The Pineridgp:- "After Trenton served a 2 minute penalty for tripping, they pulled heyr. goalie. With 68 seconds left the clog, Gerard scored on an empty net giving him his first hat trigk of the season. The game ended with a 5-1 win for Pineridge who advances to the quarter finals against Alliston. The visitors took a 1-0 lead as they scored on a first period breakaway. They controlled most of the play from that point on including killing off a 2-man decond period Port power play. The "Greens" finally broke through as Dean set up Adam Moynes' wrist shot goal on a 2- on-1 break. Just 20 seconds later, big Mark Duncan deposited a puck into the top corner after the puck was kept in the offensive zone on the initiative of veteran Dane Gray. Momentum shifted further to our team as Trevor Wejsflock had a chance at an open net after Scott Duncan had made a good "keep in" at the offensive blueline. A short burst of effective passing occurred when Jeff Tarbotton passed back to Tyler Houthuys at the point. He in turn made a cross-ice blueline pass to Dane who got a low hard drive at the E.G. net. _ It looked like victory was in the making as Dean stole the puck in the slot and gave the Malmonts a third period 3-1 edge on his third breakaway of the day. How to use those wheels Dean! Unfortunately, the Eagles felt otherwise and they tied things at the end of regulation time at 3- all. Their number two was by a shooter left uncovered in front and number 2 was near the end of the third as Port was about to be called on a delayed penalty. Mike Koury patrolled the crease for the full game and made a big: O.T. save off an Eagle player again left all alorie in front. Other Malmont players who were striving to do their best were Justin Moffatt, Steve " MacLennan, 'Tim Jones and Mike LeFort. The Oshawa Red Wings won the tournament by defeating Uxbridge. - The consolation champion was Newmarket Redman who prevailed over the > East Gwillembury Eagles. Many thinks go out to Port Perry Lions Club who were the tournament sponsors. Maybe next year's Malmont squad will reclaim the hardware for Port Perry. a lot of fun the night of Feb. 13. The spectators who came out to witness the '95 Challenge saw excellent curling all evening. This was Port Perry's year to bask in the limelight, but the Blackstock curlers are already thinking about next year and the prospect of bringing fhe Slider back east.
