Doors up one over Alliston The PeeWee Overhead Doors started their Quarter Final series with Alliston on a winning note as they beat Alliston 2-0 in ; the first game of the series. The game started out with the Doormen looking a little tentative and Alliston took control for the first 5 minutes or so. Ryan Fraser, in net for the Doormen, was tested early. The turning point came when Port Perry was awarded a power play and despite not scoring, the boys picked their game up considerably and began to turn the play around to their advantage. There was no scoring in the first, but some hi-lites were a good chance for Matt MacMaster at the side of the net, John Bacon being sent in on a breakaway, which the goalie stopped, and a nice shot by Joel Phoenix at the end of the period. The second period was a replay of the first with chances at both ends of the rink. The Port Perry boys displayed good control and stayed out of the penalty box. Our lines were working hard to get that first goal but were unable to click. David Justynski had a hard shot on net and the line of Bacon, Brown and VanCamp showed great justle. Chris Jones, Murphy Irvine, Wade Ritchie and Scott Cunningham displayed good penalty killing. Ryan Fraser made a glove and toe save that helped maintain the scoreless tie. The third period opened with goose eggs still on the scoreboard and the Doormen were determined to change that. Right at the start of the period, Scott Cunningham and Wade Ritchie were stymied on a good scoring opportunity as were John Bacon and Russ Brown on a 2-on-1. However, at 10:39 Murphy Irvine made a good defensive and offensive play to get the first goal for Port Perry. Murphy broke up an Alliston 2- on:1 and then carried the puck back up to the Alliston blueline where he uncorked a shot that deflected into the net off the goalie's shoulder. Three minutes later Port Perry scored again when Russ Brown carried the Scugog Bridge February 15 - Afternoon 3 1/2 Table Howell - Avg. 24 Ist - Doris Phinney and Don Atkinson 29 1/2. 2nd and 3rd - Helen Mathieson and Joyce Heard tied with Bea Chapman and Hoppy Carnwith 27172. 4th Marie and Harry Carnegie 24. Joel VanCamp shot the puck on net after receiving the pass from Russ and John Bacon tipped in the rebound. Port Perry continued to press and work hard keeping Alliston off stride. David Justynski made a nice play to stymie a 3-on-1 Alliston rush and the Alliston goalie made a terrific glove save on Scoot Brownson who was left alone in front of their net. A late third period penalty taken by Port Perry was killed off effectively by our boys. Port Perry held on to win 2.0. Ryan Fraser got the win in the net. On Wed. night, the Doormen had travelled to Uxbridge for an exhibition game and came away with a 3-2 win. Chris Thompson and Ryan Fraser got the win in net in this game. Port Perry scored two quick goals in the first period to get the game underway. Murphy Irvine scored the first on a shot from the point that surprised the goalie. Russ Brown was credited with the assist. The second goal was scored by John Bacon who tipped in a rebound from Russ Brown's shot. Joel VanCamp also had an assist. Later in the period, Grant Hooker had a good shot on net from the point and Chris Thompson was very sharp in stopping an Uxbridge forward who had broken in alone. Kam Cooper also had a good chance when he had an open net to shoot at on a rebound from Chris Jones' shot. In the second, Uxbridge and Port Perry traded goals. Murphy Irvine scored his second goal, Port's third, when his shot from the point found the net through a maze of players. Port Perry had a 2-man advantage at the time. Port Perry took 'a 3-1 lead into the third. Joel VanCamp made a nice attempt on a wraparound but Uxbridge scored their second when Ryan Fraser was partially screened. Ryan was sharp minutes later though when an Uxbridge forward was left alone in front of the net. Port Perry took two penalties late in the game and John Burnett and Reid McTaggart helped in killing off the penalties. Uxbridge pulled their goalie with 2:50 left in the game, but, were curfewed seconds later to allow Port Perry to take the win. The Doormen go to Alliston on Thursday, Feb. 23 for Game 2 and return to Port Perry for Game 3 on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 6:00 pm. Come out and cheer them on.
