=" 14 -- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesd: J March 14, 1995 . Woodworking a lifetime Joy for this senior by Heather McCrae Whenever Father's Day, Christmas or a birthday rolled around, Mel Meulemeester's kids never had a hard time deciding what to get their Dad. All they had to do was buy another, tool and they knew he'd be happy. Mel has enjoyed working with wood most of his life. As a young lad of ten, he was already experimenting with his carpentry skills by making rabbit cages, "to make a few cents for an ice cream cone" he said, during a recent interview with the Citizen. Whether he's making furniture, doing renovations or building something he never utilizes a pattern but always makes his creations from his own imagination. His wife, Bertha, told the Citizen she thinks her husband got his creativeness from his mother. "She was a great . dressmaker" she said, "who'd often see a dress she liked in the store, then go home and, without using a pattern, would sew a garment identical to the one on the rack, only of better quality." A firm believer of "if you're going to do something, you'd better do it right or not at all", Mel takes a lot of pride in his work. Twenty-five years ago the kids bought their Dad a band saw. "it's the best tool in the shop" he said, and the one used the most. Hanging on the wall in his workshop is every tool imaginable including the hammer he lovingly used more than 60 years ago when he began making those rabbit cages. "I've got so many (tools), pretty soon I'll be selling them" he laughed. Something new he's been working on over the past few winters are bird feeders. Made out of pine, each one is a huge log cabin styling, complete with cedar shingled rqofs and eavestroughs that really work. Recently he made one of these bird feeders for the Knights of Columbus to use as a prize in a TUESDAY is ALWAYS SENIORS' DAY Save 10% on All Regularly Priced Merchandise. Since retiring from Gus Brown Motors 11 years ago, Mel has chosen to remain active and, along with his woodwork, enjoys golfing, gardening and cutting the grass on his acreage uth of Utica. Over the years he's ny quite a bit of volunteer landscaping and carpentry work for the Uxbridge and Port Perry Lawn Bowling Clubs and various other organizations as well. "She's a good cook", he told the Citizen, patting his stomach. "She has to be, that's why I don't get sick" he smiled. Being left handed, he pitched for 35 years on several fast ball teams, including the Oshawa Colts, Oshawa Tonys and the Brooklin Intermediate "A" Team. "When I start something I don't know enough to quit' he laughed. "But it's better than doing nothing. Enjoying the occasional cigar, Mel says it's best to remain active all your life.
