The members of the Oshawa Competition Motorcycle Club who zip around the Lake Scugog ice every Sunday afternoon wanted to say thanks to this community through a donation to the Memorial Hospital. Last week they turned over $650 which the members raised through racing entry fees. The club has made previous generous donations to the local hospital. Blood supplies at critical low A blood donor clinic will be held in Port Perry this week as the Red Cross continues to issue an urgent appeal for blood in Central Ontario. The Red Cross said last week the blood shortage now is so severe that some hospitals have been forced to cancel non- emergency surgery. Residents of Scugog will have a chance to donate blood on Wednesday, March 15 (2:00 PM- 8:00 PM) at the Masonic Lodge ~ on Queen Street. Peter Miles who is director of the Clinic for theLodge said all donors will get more than the usual juice and donut this time. "There will be hot cups of soup for everyone. Qur theme for this clinic is 'come out of the cold and have a cup of soup with us." Mr. Miles said the Red Cross has set a target of 180 units for the Port Perry clinic, and he's confident the people of the community will make sure this target is reached or surpassed. At the last clinic at the Masonic Lodge just before Christmas, the target was 180 units of blood and just over 200 units were collected. The Red Cross in Central Ontario needs at least 900 units HArpry ST. PATRICK of blood each day to keep up with the demand and in recent weeks this amount has not been reached. pes "Thousands_. of" hospital patients -depend on blood donatifns. Two patients at one area hospital, for example are scheduled for liver transplants this week," said Dr. Roslyn Herst, medical director of the Toronto Blood Centre. This kind of life-saving surgery can require more than 20 units of blood. Other patients may need even more blood. A motorcycle "accident victim needed 48 units over a five day DINE VN {a5 period, = The Red Gross and the Port Perry Mason are urging healthy donors between 17 and 70 years of age to attend the clinic. Donors are reminded to bring photo and signature ID with them. Mr. Miles has worked at the Masonic Port Perry clinic for several years and recently found out personally why blood donors are so important. A health problem put him in hospital for nearly two weeks and he required two units of blood, harvest agreements native bands in the Williams Treaty area can hunt deer from Oct. 15 to Dec. 31 and modse from Oct. 1 to Dec. 31. Turn to page seven Island crash injures young driver A 17-year old Oshawa woman is in serious condition following 'a single car accident on the Scugog Island road. A Durham Police spokesman said Tara Jackson was air-lifted to St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto and was on life support systems. Her condition was originally listed as critical, but was up- graded to serious by late Monday afternoon. The accident took place just before 1:00 AM Monday when the southbound vehicle hit the shoulder of the Island Road about a quarter mile north of the intersection with Gerrow's Beach Road. The Police spokesman said it appears the driver then "over- corrected," and the car began to slip and slide before hitting a cement pole and then rolling over near a private driveway on the west side of the Island Road. Members of the Scugog Fire Department had to be called to the scene and worked for about 20 minutes with extrication equipment to free the injured woman. The car came to rest on its roof. A passenger in the 1992 Sunbird, 17-year old Angela Colacicco, also from Oshawa, ~ 'was taken to Port Perry Hospital and released after treatment for minor injuries.
