-- 29 -- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, March 14, 1995 | FARM AND RURAL ia Daina Codlin wins National championships by Heather McCrae As a member of the Durham Pony Club, Daina Codlin has enjoyed several years of dressage riding. This being the 20 year old's final year as a DPC member, she recently learned she's the 1994 National Reserve Champion in Basic 4 Dressage and the National Champion in Basic 4 Freestyle. Awards will be given out at the ceremonies in Alberta next month. Losing the Championship in Basic. 4 Dressage by one point, she was beaten by a rider from Western Ontario. Daina began to ride when she was 12. A year later she joined the DPC and began to show in hunter classes. Throughout most of her riding career her partner in the showring has been a 13-year old black thoroughbred mare, "Powerful Purpose", known affectionately as "Mary". In the late 80s "Mary" pulled a muscle and her veterinarian advised Daina to quit jumping with the horse. "I have to credit Heather Chapman of Blackstock for getting me to switch from jumping to dressage" Daina told the Citizen in an interview at her Myrtle home. A member then of the Oshawa Pony Club, based out of Hoskin Stables, Heather told Daina "after you ride in a dressage saddle once, you'll never want to nde in anything else again." "And she was right" Daina smiled. Soon after she began taking dressage lessons at Greystone and "Mary" seemed to take to the transition quickly. "She never seemed to like jumping much" Daina said "but was all heart when it came to dressage". Not only was Daina highly recognized in the 1994 Nationals, but was also the year's Regional Champion dressage rider of both the Basic 3/4 Division and Basic 4 Freestyle. She won the Regionals by achieving highest points during her show circuit. All the top Regional riders from each province across Canada are then sent to the National PC Head ters and tabulated for the National prizes. A dedicated rider, Daina trailered her horse faithfully to King City weekly where she was coached by Daphne Haagmans-Edwards, a Level 3 Coach, who specializes in Freestyle and also competes across the continent at the Olympic Grand Prix level. Daina's parents, Tom and Nancy, have always been supportive of her riding and her mother is the National Dressage Chairperson. Truly a work of art, dressage is a graceful riding partnership between rider and horse. Instructions 'or aids are invisibly passed from rider to horse through physical contact and pressure causing horse and rider to move adroitly.as one unit. Freestyle 1s a test, ridden to music of the rider's choice. Co titions, organized at Branch, Regional and National levels offer trials in dressage, eventing, jumping, Prince Philip Cup Games (relay races on horseback), tetrathalon (riding, running, swimming, shooting) and Quiz (purely academic). Recognized judges are used for dressage and rallies since the Regional and National Dressage Championships require marks from recognized judges. Some of the best Olympic riders in the world, such as Ian Millar (jumping) and Cindy Ishoy (dressage) began their riding careers early through Pony Club, Daina is currently giving riding lessons to 14 students, ranging in age from seven to sixteen years. While most are interested in jumping, she coaches one in western and another is really keen in dressage. Recently " my slipped on the ice, tearing a muscle in her back. Although stall rest, medication and acupuncture are part of her recovery, her career in the showring is over. "But she leaves on a good note" Daina said. "It's heartbreaking I can't go.any further with her but it's awards) something I can look back on". ~~ CORN BURNING PELLET FURNACES Fe. SE 700. Maple Syrup time Maple Syrup - the natural sweetener - is as Canadian as the maple leaf itself. Canada claims almost 70% of the world's production. Some of the finest syrup is produced right here in Durham Region. When purchasing maple syrup check the label. Maple syrup, sold in Ontario, must be properly labelled. To meet Ontario regulations the label must contain the following information: - Name of product - "Maple Syrup" or "Pure Maple Syrup" - Volume of maple syrup in the container - in millilitres or litres - Name and address of the producer or packer - Grade and colour class of the maple syrup. If the label does not state "Maple Syrup", chances are it is not maple syrup, but a cheaper artificial substitute. ) Make the maple syrup season a special time with your family.
