~~ Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, March 14, 1995 --3 - Nigerian scam surfaces in Durham Region When Lisa Piebalgs received a letter last month from Nigeria promising a huge sum of money for a business relationship, she promptly notified Durham Police. Ms. Piebalgs, controller for Organization Metrics of Brooklin said she was surprised that such an offer would be made, but never gave it any serious thought. The letter, from a Dr. Ebiye Okrika of Lagos, Nigeria promised 40 per cent in commissions and expenses to transfer $38.5 million (U.S.) out of Nigeria to an overseas account. The letter then went on to ask for the bank account number of Organization Metrics, the banker's name, company letterhead and copies 'of company invoices. Dr. Okrika described himself as a "member of the federal government of Nigeria contract award and monitoring committee in the Ministry of Petroleum." Fundraising for Scugog Centre The Scugog Centre Advisory Board has established a promotional and fundraising sub-committee to oversee the development commitment for this multi-purpose centre. The sub-committee has established goals for the Centre's capital construction program and has advanced financial commitments to secure additional equipment and fixtures. The continual advancement of the Scugog Centre Master Plan, to secure a second ice pad, aquatic facilities, squash courts as well as supporting exercise areas, will be a major focus. in the sub-committee's ongoing fundraising. A Fundraising Kick-off has been set for Thursday, March 30th, 6:30 pm at the Scugog Arena/Centre Site for the Ground Breaking Ceremony and 7:30 pm in Municipal Council Chambers for a Fundraising Meeting at which time plans will be revealed for fundraising programs. A numberof pledges have been received to date including: Rotary Club $20,000., Port Perry Minor Hockey $12,000., Port Perry & District Minor Softball $9,000. and the Honeydale Women's Institute $400.
